I, for one, would love to have some of my work selected for a hotel . . . or better yet a hotel chain. And I don't care how boring or prosaic or unimaginative or whatever anyone might call it as long as it put the pennies in my pocket :)

We strive to make exiting, fascinating or imaginative photos, that's why we use our cameras. We want to take people away from only making a penny, to learn to see more, to try to eat different food, to listen to more sounds, to read, to experience more than what they usually do, see, eat, watch, observe, expect. Give them interest, beauty, let them think ...
I worked for 40 years trying to do this and spent all my life so far in the arts. If I did not put a lot of pennies in my pocket I had and have instead a marvelous time.

I admire and envy your art and the artist in you, Mariuca - and the art of and the artist in so many others here. And I didn't really mean to say I would sit down and deliberately "produce" photos simply to please a hotel chain and make some money. However, I am not an artist - I don't have the gift that you and others do. And when it comes to my photography, I do what pleases me - which is sometimes "slick", I'm afraid. It's rarely what others would call "art"; but when I "keep" a piece, it's because it speaks to me in at least some small way. Others might call it "pretty" or "boring" or "ordinary" . . . but I like it for whatever reason. And if someone else "tells me", by wanting to purchase and hang it, that it pleases them, too, I'm vain enough to enjoy that thought. The smiley face after my statement was intended to indicate that I was speaking lightly, but in so doing I did not intend to make light of anyone's art.

The beauty of art is that you *can* have it both ways.

I don't do standard phgotography business, i.e. portrait/food/wedding/sports/journalism photography because doing those kind of things sucks all the pleasure out of the art.

However, that said, if someone wants to buy my work, and it's a windfall like a hotel/assisted living center/hospital, I *will* be a mercenary slut pig to the Nth degree.

There was a lot of back and forth with Wendy when she was agonizing over breaking into the commercial aspect as she didn't want to compromise her signature style and caliber of work for sales.

That's a tough call, but here's the deal...... I just sold one of my beauties, a large gallery print, approximately 24x36 in a custom frame, archival ink, non-glare glass, and the image itself was an award-winning image several times over. I sold it for $350.

It cost me over $200 for the printing/enlargement and custom frame. So, considering standard retail markup, I sold my printer's and framer's work retail.

I got *NOTHING* for my image, realistically. WTF???

I also had that framed image for 14 years. FINALLY, the right person came along and bought it.

I'd honestly have to say that it probably took five years or more to sell the prints that I had framed even having opened a gallery.

Now I print on canvas, it's cheap, and I can sell them cheap. BUT......with the markup, I actually get paid for my images, and I sell a bunch more 'cause they're reasonable.

I still do commission work and often will have a larger print made for someone that likes a particular image.

I can also stock a bunch more without tying up enough money to buy a car, which I simply couldn't afford to do before.

Hey, we all have to eat and have a roof over our head. There's no shame in engaging in sales if someone wants "pretty pictures".

There are a jillion photographers out there. Just think how many fabulous pictures would be out there if every photographer took one world class image in their life.

There would be millions.......so those prolific people who have taken hundreds or even thousands of world class images, well.......

So no, one doesn't have to "sell out" and take advantage of a chance to sell 60 images to a hotel, but why on earth wouldn't you???

Personally, as far as life goes, I love it that I can get paid for doing what I love......and have been all my life.

Just my perspective.....YMMV.
