A fabric backdrop. I want to be able to gather it at the top in a few places so it has shape to it.
I was thinking satin with a black backing. (so that no light can come from behind the backdrop)
But what colour for it? Not too dark.

| Don't use satin -- it's reflective. Preferrably, use velvet (expensive!), velveteen, brushed denim, or other fabric with a "nap" which will serve to diffuse the reflections and provide a smooth, non-reflective background. |

While we are here... What colour would you recommend for a colour portrait... Navy Blue?

personally, i'd go for a deeper colour. like a rust red, yellow ochre, deep (yet rich) green.
i'm thinking of heading down to the nearest bulk sewing/fabric retailer and having a squizz.

If you have time, take the person whose portrait you're taking to the fabric store so you can SEE what color is most complimentary. Ask if you can take a few quick test photos (remember you're likely under fluorscent lights) and you can actually check the colors.
I like you choices, but at upwards of $30/yard ANY color better look good in velvet. |

With the price being so high I was wondering what would be a good all round colour. I wouldn't like to spend a mint on the velvet for this challenge and not be able to use it again.
