I've been out of photography for several years due to some life circumstances but I am starting to get back at it. My frustration now is that LR and Photoshop no longer work on my Mac because of my current operating system. I cannot justify a monthly subscription and it aggravates me that is my only option to use LR.

Are there any recommendations for LR substitutes? I searched but didn't come up with any threads newer than 2020.

I was making money as a photographer several years ago, happily using LR 5 and now that I have some opportunities to make some money again, I don't know what is going to be sufficient as a photo editor!!

Any advice is appreciated!!

Cheers!

edited to correct spelling.

Does Adobe no longer make Mac versions of these? You could run Windows on your Mac, that would allow you to run anything.

I use Luminar for RAW processing and Corel Paitshop pro for final editing, but neither has a Mac version.

In terms of what you can do with Lightroom nowadays I think you should really consider that monthly description. Lightroom Classic really has evolved, with possibilities re masking and all.

If that̢۪s not an option for you I recommend Affinity Photo. It̢۪s an one-time payment and you have almost all the possibility̢۪s that Photoshop provides including RAW editing.

ON1 Photo Raw might be a possibility for you. A stand-alone version is $80 and you can download a trial. There is also a lower cost subscription option. The workflow is probably not as easy as Lightroom.

Luminar Neo is very cool...

I think it really depends on what sort of processing you're going to do.

As Kroburg stated, don't write off Lr/Ps. You can get a subscription to both for basically $10/mo, and at times you can find deals on subscription extensions if you pay annually. It's really one of the best deals out there on software.

I think subscription-only is an abomination ...

I think I've finally switched to it, now that it has all it's features and doesn't seem to crash on my PC constantly any longer. I bought it for $35 on a prerelease sale several years ago and kept trying it every few months, then going back to Luminar 4 again.

There is definitely some downside with the upside...
- The upside is that you have a product that is always up to date. In Adobe's case, that truly means you are getting frequent and value-laden updates.
- The dark cloud around that silver lining is that if you have older hardware or OS, you may eventually find that you either have performance problems or it just won't run at all

Given the above, it sure would be nice if Adobe made older versions available for a perpetual license.

That happened to me and I think this is what has happened to the OP too.

I'm mighty annoyed that I'm forced to upgrade my hardware if I stick with Adobe. ETA. Adobe no longer supports the OS that I can use on my desktop. Consequently I'm moving over to CaptureOne and ON1Raw. I tried Affinity but prefer the other two to Affinity.
