Not exactly a challenge suggestion, but a suggestion for voting in challenges. I wonder if it would make us think more when voting in challenges if we didn't have the option of voting 5?? (1-4 & 6-10). It would (maybe) stop us from hitting the 5 button on a perceived average shot and make us think more if we had to give 4 or 6 for the midrange. Just having a break from voting and thinking out loud :)

If not an actual rule, I think it is a good way to "think" when voting. Obviously, you are giving some real thought to yours!

I like that, improving on a good idea :) I do give 5's but worry that I'm doing it too often, I was amazed at how much more time it took to settle on a score and it helps me learn.

I think I'll try this, I like it a lot. Great way to break out of your 'mold'. |

Why not extend the voting scale to 11 or any odd number above? It would be impossible to cast an average vote.
Having less entries but a much broader scale would re-engage my present lackluster voting habits.

If I give a 5 it is usually average. And 6 to me is above average and 4 is below. I for one would rather get a 5 then a 4.
What is so wrong with getting 5's and giving 5's?

Very good idea. I, personally, am still hoping that the site council will be able to eventually consider the things that have been discussed at length here in regards to creating some "check boxes" for what you are basing your votes on, etc. Some simple way to give the person at least some kind of indication of what went into your decision without undo time on the voter's part - anything that helps the voter will help us all in the end.

what about a 3 way voting thing. . .
1-10 on creativity
1-10 on technical
1-10 on something else
you get the idea.

There were huge threads on this just a while back, but the site council has also stated that they were making some other changes/improvements first and then could move forward. I think (hope) this will be one of the things looked at. Thee were some ingenious ideas in the threads.

I quite agree but rather than simply giving a 5 because its average I'll take longer looking at the picture to see why I should give it a 4 or a 6, if I can't find one then its a 5. We would all prefer a 5 to a four, just as we would prefer a 6 to a 5. Looking a pics like this will maybe make be comment more on the mid range pics that often get very few comments. As I said I'm thinking out loud.

If you think about it, having it this way as it is today, 5 isn't the exact average vote, you can give 1,2,3,4,5 and 6,7,8,9,10, so the exact average rating is 5.5 because the option of giving "0" isn't there. Then I would say that 5 is under average and 6 is above average in the dpc rating system. But when I'm voting, then 5 and 6 is average, but then I have the option of two average votings, and that's good to have! |

I do not feel evangelical about my suggestion. I was between posts. ;-)

I've actually voted like this in some of the challenges I've voted in recently (Not that I think giving or receiving 5's is a bad thing). What i found is that I could look at a picture adn say, "Whatever. 5" and move on. By not using 5, it makes me say to myself, is it a bit above 5 or a bit below. Just one way I make my self slow down and look at the pictures. |

Sadly on the Newspaper challenge so far (I've voted & commented on 7) I've given 5s and 4s. They're average and just below average photos. I have to have a bit of "Cool" when I see the photo to bump it up. Maybe in that it's well lit, or it fits the challenge well or something. But I don't see 5 as "bad" just not super good. A 6 to me is much better, there's a dividing line there that has to be crossed.

I've decided not to vote on the paper challenge, A because I did not enter and B because I don't understand it or the way people think (not really an open challenge).
As a side thought (and I'm sad for recording this) the last 5 votes for my desat pic have been 9, 2, 2, 3, 9, peeps either love it or hate it! I love it so am happy (5.1***)

Well, thankfully I don't feel so bad anymore, I've voted on 10 more and had one 5, two 6s, one 7, and two 10s. :) There are some good ones, they're just hidden. ^_^
