I got myself a Dimage A1. It's lovely. Problem is.. my husband is afraid to use it. My teenager broke my old HP 612 that my husband really liked. My husband is going to be taking a trip without me for a few days and I want him to have a camera he's comfortable with.
Here are my requirements:
below $300
at least 3MP
external flash
LCD on the back
point and shoot
I don't care about digital zoom but a good optical zoom would be nice.
He doesn't need anything real fancy, just something simple without a lot of buttons. He also doesn't want another HP...even though he liked the 612. go figure.
I'm not all that up on the different models that are out there so I thought I'd run this by y'all.
thanks,
Lisa

What part of your current camera does he not like? The weight, the buttons are difficult to use, difficult to hold, color, too many manual features, etc ? |

Force the baby into his hands and bark at him: SHOOOOOOOOOT! Just make him hold it and snap something with it. Give it to him in full auto mode and say: snap.
I had the same problem with my girlfriend and my 10D. She was terrified of it.

He is afraid he'll drop it and break it. Also we'll both be on seperate trips this summer and my camera will be with me so he'd still need something of his own. :) I'll check out the Powershots!
edited to say that there are no glass drinking containers in our house. He broke them all (dropped). We're strictly plastic now.

I love my Fuji S5000. It has lots of manual features and a nice sleek SLR look. It has 22x Zoom and 6mp, if I am not mistaken. If you got it without any of the extra lenses you could spend around $300. It is also small, lightweight and perfect to hang around your neck. Go to the Fuji Website and take a video tour, its a lovely camera.
Good Luck |

I agree - any of the A-class cameras are good. I have an A70, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend/buy in that range again. |

He liked HP612?
First person who do so ...
If you like camera which is really easy to use ,get a Fuji,a 3000 or 3800,6X zoom 3.2 MP and long battery life.
You can find both of them for less than 300 $.

I'd agree with the Fuji suggestion - really good cameras in auto mode: even my oter half can take shots with Fuji cameras. Though it does have a few buttons I'm afraid. Doesn't have a 22x zoom however - just 10x.

My husband shoved the wrong usb cable into an old Olympus I had - totally messed it up! The rule now is that he's not allowed to insert anything into my digitals!
I bought a Pentax S40 for him to use (it's really the family snap-shooter) and he gets along with it very well. |

The compact Canon´s (IXUS, A- og S-lines) are fine and also I think some of the compact Olympus cameras are very good.

Take a look at the Olympus weather resistant models. There might be something in that price range. I also would recommend the Canon cameras.
If he's prone to dropping things, get him a neck strap or a wrist cord (and MAKE him use it).

Or tell him you're going to get him an Argus DC1730 (a 0.3MP digicam with a flash and color LCD for less than $50, available at Wal-Mart) if he's not more careful. =] |

I walked my dad through getting the A80. He successfully took it to Normandy for D-Day, managed not to drop it, lose it, or stick something in the wrong port. :)
Now I just have to get my brother to help him download the images and we will be set.

Think I might understand why he doesn't want to use the A1. It can be a bit overwelming with all the functions it has. Take a look at some of the fuji cameras. The A210 is a nice camera, isn't as bulky as the DiMage A1, and it is well within your budgeted amount.
Although something you may want to consider is your cards! If you already have a lot of cards for your A1 you might want to look for other cameras using the same memory card.
If you have a Ritz Camera near you go in tell them what you have what you are wanting and see if they can find you one that uses the same card. Also they have a fantastic protection plan so if the camera gets damaged in any way they will repair or replace it.

Yeah, I have a lot of compact flash cards and I might let him have one :) I'm reviewing the different cameras now. I know he likes the Fuji. He's not all that camera savy and I think it bothers him that he has to have me around to do all the picture taking.
We're taking the kids to the park later and by golly, that man IS going to take a picture with the A1 |

Personally, I like Canon! But Olympus makes good cameras under $300 as well. |

Okay. I think I've decided on Canon Powershot A75. It's 3.2 MP and uses Compact Flash and looks simple enough for him to use.
I made a typo earlier when I mentioned external flash..brain fart. I meant built-in flash. |
