ah, but Putin is not alone, just as Trump was/is not. all the sycophants yipping and yapping round their heels.

but what are we going to do about it...

Assassination? 5th column?

actually there is the suggestion that in the end this is what happened with Stalin. as well it appears that Putin has gone bonkers. somehow the textbooks are not really helpful in these cases.

what we do is what we always do. every now and then we need to change our life, almost as Rilke said. lately I've been thinking that everything is already there in the old testament - Jeremiah, Isaiah, and my old friend Ecclesiastes.

be well.

I never thought I'd distrust everything. My first reaction was to try to find BBC or other international news instead of just U.S. news.

The last couple of years should have been so different. It should have been a world coming together to solve world problems. Not to have torn everyone apart.

Excellent points here. Sadly if there is a nominal democracy to worry about it is the US. 72 million voters here ready to dump even our pretend version of democracy.

Trump will win.
There are enough sycophants that simply can't leave the money train he's able to pull with the US populace.

The GOP used to be a party with principles, albeit ones I didn't align with. Now it's a caricature. MTG, Boebert, Gosar, Gaetz, Cawthorn, .....

And Republicans who actually stand for something (ie. Cheney, Kinzinger, ...) get pushed out of anything meaningful. So you either kiss the ring or lose your head.

It's a sad fact that registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans almost everywhere, and yet can't seem to get it together to get even 60% or so of them to vote.

I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends â€Â¦ that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.

I hope you are wrong, the prospect is daunting. This is the only time when I am happy that I am no longer young.

I disagree with Venser's certainty. There are too many variables. But it is plausible that Trump will win in 2024. Democrats seem determined to put up the worst possible candidate against him.

Right. Something I've never understood.

I don't know if Americans realize how much impact Trump made on the rest of the world. Our apartment's Swiss owner in Chardonne came to us to share her jubilation when Trump lost the election. She absolutely hated his behavior. My husband (English from Yorkshire) who never wished a bad thing on anyone jumped our of joy when he heard that Trump had Covid. He hoped he would die. He said he never wished this on any person.

I'm curious about what the rest of the world thinks of Biden.

I never thought the world would get to this point in my lifetime. I'm scared for my grandchildren.

The level of destruction that the Repugnicans seem to be okay with makes me worry about the rest of my life.

If this country continues at the rate that it is now, it'll be flushed down the toilet in the next decade.

Many PBS stations carry news programs from other countries -- locally I can see news from the BBC, Germany, Japan, and maybe some others ...

I would love to see a poll showing which news outlets people on DP challenge read.

And not only a poll on the news sources, but I would love to see if Americans feel their country is headed in the right direction.

cbc.ca
pbs.org
aljazeera.com
economist.com

Those are the four I frequent the most. Facts over opinions.

You mean the direction where someone with empathy, intelligence, and cares about more than simply enriching himself runs the country, I would say yes.

What about morally? Of course that will depend on the morals you value?

I worry a little when we think there are different morals ....
