At the risk of starting another "The Shutter on the Rebel Fails at 10000 shots" thread, the concern did make me think of file numbering on my camera... I do have a question of interest that maybe someone knows about:
When I bought my Rebel, the file numbering didn't start at 1, and yes, it was a brand new camera. Currently, I'm at a file count of ~9200, and I KNOW I haven't taken that many shots since November last year. Actually, I'd be surprized if I took half of that.
Is there a reason why I'd not have started numbering at 1, and just out of curiosity, is there a way to manipulate the number other than resetting it to zero (which I assume can be done somehow)? So, say, I wanted to move the count to 4000, which may be a more accurate number for me. Does anyone know if that's possible, or is that a little like trying to roll back the odometer? :)
Thanks...

I think its only possible to reset it compleatly not to some specific number (other than 0).
I find your story pretty strange. The file name on my first image was 100_0001. |

Agreed... it IS pretty strange. I've never been able to explain it, but I never really had a problem with it, so it became a curiosity rather than a concern. Thanks for your feedback. |

After 199_9999 you will move to 200_0000.
Did you put a CF card from another camera in your 300D? Canon cameras 'pick up' the highest number on the CF card (even if it's over the internal counter) and use that.

Yep, mine started at zero when I used my new card, but then when I swapped over to my old card I used in my G2 my counter went up. The new card was then also at that number. It uses the highest number, whether it be on the camera or on the card.

Ah! That could be... I've used a card with my old HP 320 camera and it's possible that I moved the card between the cameras once or twice. That solves that mystery... thanks!
Although that does raise a couple issues:
1. It's kinda surprizing that the Rebel's internal settings can be messed with so easily.
2. I'll never know what my orignal count is now...:)

I think the logic of this "feature" is that you would be wanting to keep all the downloaded shot in sequence while using multiple cameras, and CF cards. |

True, that... they should give the consumer a choice though... hence the idea that being able to designate a number for the file is nice. I'd like to be able to restart from 4000, but I can live with 9200. :)

Hee hee... not to create a stir. The folks over at DPReview are getting sick of this one, but there are a load of threads about how it seems the Rebel has a life of 10000 shots before the shutter gives out. There is, of course, nothing to substantiate this definitively. A few people have had problems with that, but my rationale is that, given how many cameras have been sold, and we're only hearing about the ones that broke, the chances are pretty slim.
If you want to check out the threads, you can start here:
