Well the thing I do is:

Method 1:
Open up your foto is PS.
Select: IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS ->DESATURATE

Your whole image will go B/W

Select the history brush from your toolbar and "paint" the original color in on the things you like in color.

Use a small brush and the magnifying tool foor difficult places.

Method 2:

Select everything you want to have b/w with the lasso tool and/or magic wand, leaving everything that must have color alone.
Now select: IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS ->DESATURATE

If it is easyer to just select the things you want in color, do the same, select the color stuff, then goto: SELECT -> INVERSE and then:
IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS ->DESATURATE

Method 3:

Open Photo & select: IMAGE -> ADJUSTMENTS ->DESATURATE
Open Photo again.

You will have 1 B/W and 1 Color.

Ajust both photo's so that the B/W looks like you want, do the same to the color.

Now use the lasso tool and/or magic wand to select your colored bits you want in the b/w photo. After selecting everything select EDIT -> COPY.
Go to your B/W photo and select EDIT -> PASTE INTO

Hope that helps.

(Don't send in a great photo, because I am participating too in this challenge)

Numo - I took the time to write "PhotoShop Elements - DeSaturdation for Dummies" and post it here a few days ago.

If you only have Photo Shop Elements you can't use anyone else's directions. There is no 'History Brush' in Elements.

If you have a full version of PhotoShop Philos31's instructions look pretty good.
