Does anybody have any suggestions for brands or types of umbrellas to use with a Canon 550EX flash? I want to bounce the light, and possibly shoot through as well.

For bouncing you need sliver lined black one for shooting through them you need white ones
I hope this helps

Mick:

Check out the Photek Softlighter II. I have two of them (one 46" and one 60") and it is a pretty versatile umbrella. You can use it 1) as a regular umbrella, 2) with the translucent diffuser on or off [shown "on" in the picture], 3) you can remove the black cover and shoot through it, and 4) you can reverse the black cover, turning it in to a sort-of softbox, preventing "spill" when shooting through it. [I haven't actually tried it with the black cover off yet.]

Actually, I was looking at these yesterday, but I couldnât tell from the sketchy description if they would work with a shoe-mount flash like the Canon 550EX. Their web site says, âA totally fireproof material creates its own collar around the lighthead, with no time consuming fitting of mounting collars or rib setups involved.â It doesnât mention shoe-mount flashes at all. If they do, it would be much cheaper than a softbox.

An umbrella mount is all you need. You mount that on your lightstand, and it allows you to mount both the umbrella and your hot-shoe type flash.

Wow, that was a quick turnaround! Weâll have to start calling you Fast Eddy. :)

Funny, but I already have three Impact Umbrella Brackets in my shopping cart on B&H. :) They look like identical products, and the prices are the same.

My shopping cart also has two Bogen/Manfrotto 3361QL Light Stands, one Bogen/Manfrotto 3398B Boom Stand, and another Canon 550EX Speedlite. After I throw in some umbrellas, and maybe a reflector or two, I should be set, at least for a while. But my wife is gonna have a fit! :)

Thanks for the quick reply Fast Eddy!

I'm a DPC junkie in the morning while I eat breakfast, get caught up on email, etc. =]

I went with the Bogen 3362 stands. Not sure if you are really sold on the "quick lock" mechanism; I went with the 3362 because they are air-cushioned, which is kinda nice.

I haven't ordered these casters yet but they might be on my wish list soon...

Not sure if you were getting the boom stand with the intention of using it to hold a reflector or not, but this seems like a decently priced kit (although the included boom stand isn't designed to hold as much weight as the Bogen).

Me too, except I never eat breakfast.

I originally had those in my cart, but I replaced them with the 3361QLs because I really like the quick-lock levers on my 3021Bpro tripod. Iâm hoping the levers on the light stands are just as good. Do the air-cushioned stands require a certain type of locking mechanism? It would be nice if they had the same stand with both features.

That is interesting, and Iâll have to think about that. I was planning on buying some type of grip or clamp head since Iâll probably want to mount different types of items to the boom. However, that boom comes with a reflector and the mounting hardware too, for about the same price as the bogen stand. Itâs definitely worth consideration. Thanks!
