Overall the standard seems to be pretty high in this challenge (I'm excluding my own from this, it's really bad). But there is one thing I've noticed whilst voting...

...Virtually all of the highest scoring images were taken either at sunset on sunrise, I know this was mentioned in the Improve your photo's thread, but I think it̢۪s worth repeating as it seems to make a big difference. Using the light at these times really seems to improve an image, conversely photos taken at noon do seem dull.

I suppose more generally the message is to think about the light, which is something I̢۪ll be trying to do more in the future.

This is partly why I love seeing everyone else̢۪s photo̢۪s. (The other reason of course, is that some are amazing)

Light at noon or when the sun is high and bright can be useful in certain situations. You'll often see it used when a prominent shadow is a strong focal point in the image. The use of the 'golden hour' is very popular and really does enhance the colors and mood of an image.
