I have decided to purchase a mat cutter, and after searching the forums here and looking elsewhere on the net I believe I have decided on a Logan Simplex 750 cutter.

I have two questions for anyone that may have some insight.

1) Does anyone have anything negative to say about this particular cutter, or perhaps own one and wish they had gone with something different? It looks like a very solid cutter to me, and has favorable reviews.

2) I intend to order this from DickBlick.com, where it is $189.98 with no tax and free shipping. Anyone know of a less expensive option than this? I have not seen this item any cheaper, and I have not seen it offered locally where there are "20% off any item in the store" or those type coupons.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Rich,

I have this mat cutter and love it. I only had one problem and this could have been a manufacturing issue. The laminate board was pretty seriously warped resulting in my mats being cut crooked. It took me a few tries to figure out it wasn't my inexperience making bad cuts.

I called Logan and they offered to ship me a new one with a return label for the bad one. They took my credit card number, but would only have charged it if they didn't get the old cutter back within 30 days. I was very pleased with their customer service. You have to call though, they aren't that great about returning emails in the timely fashion.

I also purchased the cutter from DickBlick for $189 - they offered free shipping for orders over $200, so I got a box of 100 blades to go with it. I'd recommend this, because the blades don't last that long before it starts getting tougher to cut and it only comes with 5. I looked everywhere before going with DickBlick, they were the cheapest.

I found out after I got the new cutter that if the cutter is stored standing on end, it can cause the laminate board to warp, so it's possible it was stored that way at DickBlick and the issue wasn't manufacturer.

As far as mat board - check DickBlick.com also. I got my first order from PictureFrames.com and not only was a corner dented on every board, but they didn't respond to my email regarding this problem. Not only that, but the minimum order is 16 mat boards. DickBlick the minimum order is 10 and they are a little cheaper per board than PictureFrames.com. Dick Blick has a HUGE selection of colors available also. I got a sample order of about 186 corners and love it.

Hopefully this helps you out! Good luck...

Edit: Not that this has any bearing on your mat cutter question, but I just received an order of 16x20 acrylic from PictureFrames.com as well and due to extremely poor packaging, 3 of them were broken. This time I called and they are sending me 3 new pieces. Shipping damage is becoming a trend from them though...
