I took the snap of a friends child today and would like to give her a copy
but I need to get some editing ideas to make it a better shot
so far I will clone out the food on her cheek and need to fix up under her bottom lip (??? how)
and then what general things should I do eg. curves/dodge/burn
I missed the top of her head.... should I try to add more background above or should I change the croping and not worry about it
any suggestions would be helpful
thanks

First of all, this is a fun shot. Your friend will love it!
I'm not sure what more I'd do other than the things you suggested. The chap on her lips can be cloned out--use a cloning brush at about 50% and get as close to the natural tones as you can. I think cropping is fine, though you could experiment with getting much closer--just her face, for example, since this is where the power of the shot is. Black and white may be an option, but then you'd miss those wonderful glasses.
Good luck!

I think the biggest thing is the top, and I would add something there, and some on the left as well. From the current size, maybe 20px on the top, 10 on the left.
As far as other edits, of course the food & lip (lip is easy to clone as well). The dark spot on the shirt seam, top of left shoulder, and the stray hair in the middle of the forehead should go, IMO.
A little soft focus (with eyes remaining sharp) would be a nice addition, but keep it gentle, you just want a soft glow.
Maybe lighten the eyes to see a little more color, and possibly tone down the red in the face just slightly.
Just for grins, I ran the above edits (10minutes, max) and the result looks like this:
Hope you don't mind me taking a cut at it... it's a very nice shot, a very personal portrait. I love portraits that seem to capture the personality of the subject, I suspect you've done that here.

Cute picture! The edits you mentioned should be great for it.
Also, if your friend's daughter is anything like my daughters, she'll love it if you run the Sketch>Photocopy filter on the picture and print out a copy for her on plain letter-size paper. It's like getting a coloring book of yourself. :-)

Used a bit of clone, healing brush, and two photoshop plugins. While the Color is nice, I like the mood of the b/w.

thanks for all the great work people
the tighter crop in B&W does look good
now I hope I can do the original justice and get the same look
I don't have PS I hope I can get the same results with GIMP
Danny what plugins did you use so I can get an idea of what they do
thanks again

If you don't mind, I also gave it a shot. Some will probably disagree, but I like the effect that the diffuse glow PS filter has on some photographs. Here is the image. I fixed the leves and contrast, the food on her cheek and the chapped lower lip. Converted to duotone and then back to RGB, burned her shirt a little (I'm still learnig to dodge and burn), fix the contrast some more and then applied the diffuse glow. I think this filter makes her seem almost angelic. You don't have to like it, but I thought I'd give it a try.

Edit: I also applied Gaussian blur at 0.3.

That is a very cute shot of a very cute kid. What an expression! I love what each of you did with PS. Hard to tell which I like better. She has a beautiful peaches and cream complexion and those glasses are great but of course, black and white always looks great. I'd let her choose. |
