Do you want a DSLR or a point and shoot? How much do you want to spend straight away, and how much over the next year or so? |

I'm VERY happy with my Canon 10D £935 for body and 1GB Hitachi microdrive. Anything elsecan be spent on lenses! oh yeah and a flash gun! |

This combination is the best bang for your buck IMHO.
You'll have US$100.15 left to get filters for your lenses.

If you've got $3k, my advice would be to not buy second-rate lenses. Also, be very selective, based on what you know you will use.
If you're going down the Canon route...
The 70-200/4L is certainly a nice lens, but bear in mind 200mm isn't a great deal of reach. You can buy the 1.4x teleconverter (to take it to 280mm top end), but that will be at f/5.6 throughout the range, which may be a little dark/slow unless you're in bright conditions all year round.
I've just ordered the 70-200/2.8L, which I'm hoping will be a lens that won't get replaced any time soon. It's expensive at ~$1130, but you may find it a good choice, and good investment. I quote FredMiranda:
"One of the finest telephoto zoom lenses in the EF line, comparable to a single focal length lens."
What that gives you is a great deal of flexibility of cropping, even a relatively small part of the image, and keeping a very crisp image. |

Go to the store and feel them in your hand. And if you have the change try them out.
Think it´s mostly matter of personal preference than quality difference. |

Well, just to make sure the Nikon camp is properly represented I have to suggest the D70 :). The bottom line is that your price range will allow you get set up nicely with either of the serious Canon or Nikon models.
There are some top-notch product reviews available on-line which I encourage you to review. dpreview.com is one of the better sites to get the details from.
Here's some links I had in my bookmarks:
Nikon D7 Review
Canon 10d review on DPReview
Nikon D70 review on DPReview
Either way you won't go wrong - just take the time to understand each model's strenthgs and weaknesses, and also to handle each one. If you do this, you'll hopefully have no trouble making the decision when you get to the store.

I was at my local Wolf camera store yesterday, playing with lenses for my new dRebel. Right beside me, there was this sweet old man looking at the Rebel and the D70. Cool that I got to play with the D70 as it was on my short list of dSLR's. Anyway, not to say anything bad about the D70 - it's a fine camera - but I like the dRebel so much better. It just fit me better. I guess the little old man felt the same 'cause he bought one and walked out of the store with a big grin on his face. By the way, Wolf is offering a $50 instant rebate on the Rebels through this week I think so if you just can't stand to wait for mail order... |

Aside from the gap in the 40-70mm range, that is indeed a nice place to start. I'd suggest adding the 50mm f/1.8 for good measure :) Or maybe drop both those f/4L lenses and grab the 24-70 f/2.8L.

I'm obviously a little biased since i have the d70, but i would recommend it. a lot of bang for your buck that's for sure.
