Well, it arrived in the post today and have been too busy for a good play with it. This was one of the first pictures I took with the new lens :)

new lens = good mood so please, critique away :)

ok, I'll start you off, a little overexposed? colour is off? at the top of the rose?

edited cos the letters on the keyboard are all jumbled up!

It does seem a little soft, but the colors are nicely saturated. Were you using a tripod?

Thanks Mick, and no tripod but I reckon 1/125 with IS should have posed no probs. Maybe I'll get the tripod out in the garden at the weekend and compare :)

Andi, did you apply sharpening to the image?

The magenta in the pettles looks a tad bright, but I believe that may be the camera? (Seem to remember Canon DSLRs being fairly sensitive to red - am I remember right there?)

I think I'll have to go back to the original but no, I don't think I sharpened the image. I quite like the shot and may well go out with the tripod at the weekend if the Rose is still in bloom (and maybe move the bench around a bit)

lol. OK. I got that lens. It's a keeper. A keeper until I'm crazy enough to dish out the coins for a Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L.

Well, this morning it looks sharper. :) It's amazing how different a photo can look under various viewing conditions. The type and level of lighting, the quality of the monitor and its settings, the condition of my eyes, and probably several other factors as well, can sometimes combine to make an image look different from one viewing to the next.

Oh well, you should still try it with a tripod, and if you can, mirror lock up and a remote shutter release. I̢۪ve been experimenting a lot lately with mirror lock up and my LC-4 wireless remote. It has significantly improved the focus in my macro and telephoto shots.

I've been really considering trading up to that lens from my 28-105/3.5-5.6 but wondering if I'll see a vast improvement...my lens always seems to shoot alittle soft except when I crank the shutter speed up to around 1/250th. I'd be interested in some shot of people with the 28-105 in lower light type settings, I'll have to stay tuned to your profile ecce. Hope you're enjoying it :)
