I have an older Coolpix -- not exactly the SLR club, but I'm planning on a D70 when the finances allow!

Anyone have personal experience with both the D70 and D100? I've seen some of the reviews, but I'm interested in the practical experience. Which do you prefer and why?

Dig around the reviews by googling for Nikon D70 and D100. There are a few articles out there which actually say the D70 takes better images in some conditions than the D100 as it improves on some things. The D100 still has more professional features though, so it's important to look at them side by side and figure out what you need. I couldn't possibly be happier with my D70, but as my first SLR I'd imagine that's a common reaction!

Go to DPReview.com and check out the D70 review, it has side-by-side between the D70, D100, & Canon 300D

Thanks all - I've seen the dpreview.com article and several of the camera mag ones, just was curious about 'in the field' experience :) Plan to purchase when I can put the money together.

Thanks cbeller - but I know I want a Nikon - just not certain on the D70 or the D100.... pricewise, I'll probably go with the D70.

The D70 was a choice. Seriously researched all the Nikon line, and person after person (those who were shooting D100's, D1x's, D2h's etc) said to go for the D70. Just prior to the purchase of the D70 I was reconsidering the D100 as it was immediately available....and the salesman recommended I opt for the D70. This being in complete concert with the previous reccommendations, it was my choice. It is exactly what I was looking for. It replaced a Nikon 4300 and I couldn't be happier. My Nikon film bodies are collecting dust. It is extremely fast (in fact nearly instantaneous) to use after turning on. At ISO 400 it surpasses my film print quality and is so similar in weight and design to my film SLR's that the learning curve was fast. The menu is quite similar to the D100, but actually has more options.

Personally I choose to go with non-Dx lenses.....but that was just me. Best of luck in your pursuit.
