I have never used a "plug-in", but my understanding is that it operates right within an existing application so you don't have to go back and forth. If this is correct, can anyone tell me the difference between NI Home Version and the "plus" version? It says on their website that "all formats supported by plug-in host", but only the "plus" version has the "Plug-in Version". I have the free trial version of NI right now and am expecting to get PS Elements 2 this week. I want to get the paid version of NI, but am ignorant of the plug-in terminology. Thank you!

I don't have the plus version, but if you have it as a plug-in it will be easier to reduce it's opacity in Photoshop as opposed to opening NeatImage outside of Photoshop and having to get the amended image back into Photoshop as a new layer which is a bit fiddly. |

Yes, Kylie, with the plug in you don't have to switch from application to application. You can just use Neat Image from the drop down menus at the top of Elements. I use it this way and it's really handy. I like Elements better than Photoshop. |

If you're entering basic challenges, you will be able to reduce the opacity of the NeatImage effect legally as you won't be using another layer. That I guess is the most important difference! |

Thanks to all. I still don't understand which I have to order from NI to have the plug-in. If you look at the pricing and features, it seem contradictory to me. One states "plug-in version" beside the "+" one, but then another chart says "all formats supported by plug-in host". I don't know enough of the terminology to know if "host" is another factor all together. ???

Hi Kylie,
You need one of the "plus" versions to have the plug-in. The main things you get with the pro+ vs. the home+ are:
- support for 16-bit/channel images
- advanced support for actions
- unlimited batch processing (vs. 10 images)
There are significant advantages to having the plug-in version. As stated by BobsterLobster, you can fade the effect legally for basic level challenges, but you can also apply it to individual color channels as required. This is also OK for basic level challenges, as you are not selecting a portion of the image.
You can also do selective application (using a mask) for advanced level challenges. All this in addition to the convenience of running it within Photoshop. What's not to like?

Ahhh!! You people are killing me here. When will NI come out for the mac? Sometimes I drag an image over to the free version on a Windows box, but what a pain in the butt.
Sorry for the rant, I know this isn't the place to bitch about NI for the mac. I'm just so sad every time I think about how great that tool is. But I'm strictly a Mac-based Photoshop User.
