I know, I know, I know. We've all just about beaten the 'PM's during challenge voting...' issue to death, but I had an idea that I don't remember seeing suggested yet:

How about making it an option to receive or not receive PM's during a challenge, and even further, making an additional option to allow or disallow PM's from members that have entered into a challenge. The PM's will be delivered once the current challenge has ended. The option, once enabled, will provide a friendly message to sender that the message will be held until after the current voting period has ended.

This way, those of us who hate getting PM's during the challenges will have the option to not get them, and those of us who like them, can still get them.

can't say I find this as such a good ideea. How about if someone else would like to pm me about something completely different during that time. As I said before when this whas discussed, I think making comments anonymous during the challenge only, names to become visible only after challenge ends, would work much better on this.

I am sorry but I think if you are going to leave a comment during a challenge then whoever took the photo should have every right to reply back to that comment! I don't reply very often to comments during challenges but when the need arrises I want to be able too. The multi-light sources challenge was one challenge where I found myself explaining the different sources of light in the photo. So if you want to take away the option to pm during challenges then the photographer's comments need to be available during the voting.

I seriously think if you don't like getting a pm about your comments you are letting behind then you shouldn't be letting a comment in the first place. It's a case of if you can leave comments then you should be able to handle comments back at you about your opinion.

As many previous threads will tell you, we used to have anonymous commenting until the challenges ended. However, it was decided that the anonymity was being abused, and thus it was removed - the side-effect of this was the ability to respond to comments. Personally, I feel that if a photog needs to explain how their photo meets the challenge, then the photo is too subtle (eg with multiple light sources, the lights should have been obvious, not needing explanation).

In my case it was obvious to anyone who had any amount of training or to anyone who took the time to really look at it. But those who just took a quick look and then voted just didn't notice the shadowing or the highlights in the photo created by the different light sources.

Hence I said too subtle - meeting the challenge in a fairly obvious way is one of the criteria for success on DPC (IMO).

I agree. Using sunlight and flash isn't really "obvious" use of multiples light sources, and even now I know, I can't see how it is obviously multiple light sources.

I understand the pros / cons of the anonymity of the PM sender, and the opinions for and against it. I actually agree with points on both camps, and thus, I have proposed a compromise between the two.

What I'm proposing is to have the option to just not receive PM's from users that are participating in the current challenge, and then to have those PM's delivered after the challenge ends. If I want to get messages, then I leave the option disabled. If I don't want to receive messages (which I don't), then I would enable the option to block PM's.

I am currently completely baffled by a comment that just says "ok," I am not going to PM that user until after the challenge, since I don't want to divulge my complete ignorance at what "ok" means. I also do not want the user to change their vote, in either the + or - direction.

I would like to see the photogs description of his/her entry during the voting. I believe this would reduce the skeptical comments and enable the photog to explain the technique used.
My photos involve a lot of experimentation (which doesn't always work well) but leads voters to suspect fraud. At present, my only recourse is to respond to comments during the voting period.
