I've been without a camera for quite some time now. I had a small problem with my camera and sent it in to Canon to get it fixed. They replaced a bunch of internal components and it came back without one of the problems fixed so I sent it back.
Almost two weeks went without hearing anything from them. I give them a call and the only thing they could tell me is they were waiting for a part. Another week goes by and I call and they are still waiting for a part. Three more days and I call back and find out that all the techs are at lunch but a lady gets my info and promises to call me back. Oddly enough, she does. She sounds sound really apologetic, too much so, as if the part had arrived long ago and my camera and paperwork had gotten set aside or something. Anyway, she promises me that the work would be completed and I would get my camera today.
So I just called them to get the tracking number so I could see if it was indeed "out for delivery". No, of course not, silly me. Sure it was shipped. Even made it to my UPS office last night but UPS decided it would be delivered on June 1st rather than today. Until then it's going to sit less than ten minutes from my house without being able to be picked up.

I hate how ups does that. It seems that every time I have something shipped it ends up arriving in my home town on a friday night, and I have to sit through the weekend with my package just down the street, waiting for them to unlock thier doors. I actually have an image tank sitting in the UPS office until June 1st as well. I hope I don't take a huge amount of pictures this weekend. This is going to be a long three days for both of us.

I've had that happen to me a couple of times, too. If you get three shipping or five day shipping and it arrives in your city before the allotted time, it just sits in the warehouse until as late as possible. I think online tracking may be the devil. |

The only time I can get a package inside a week is with 2nd day. It's an evil marketing tactic I tell ya. They put up that damn tracking page so you'll see the package just sitting there and get annoyed enough to always pay for the faster service. |

I've had a similar thing happen to me a couple times in different cities. Both times I called them and asked if I could come pick it up. They were very accomodating, even opening the door after hours and let me get my items. Give it a try and see if they will.

Yup, I always just go pick mine up at the UPS place, too. They've never had a problem, it's right down the street, and I usually get it a whole day early!

I ask every time (including this time) and they always say no. Well, I take that back the third or fourth time I asked they said it was no problem so I went down to get my package and they looked at me like I was crazy. They keep the packages locked up until they are moved onto the delivery truck. Even when it's on the delivery truck there is no guarantee that it will be delivered. Numerous occasions I've had packages marked "out for delivery" only to have their status changed later in the day to something along the lines of not due for delivery. I'm in some sort of delivery black hole where I live. Packages consistently take much longer to be delivered here (regardless of company) than in other areas. Oddly enough the delay only seems to be incoming and not outgoing. I ship items ground from SF to LA and they will arrive in 2 days. Shipping from LA to SF on the other hand is 4 days minimum but more often than not 6 or 7. |

You know what, I HATE THE UPS WEEKEND POLICY!!!!
Just wanted to get that off my chest. I sold my camera, ordered another, and it is now sitting in the UPS office just down the street from me. I can't pick it up because the office is closed. This is going to be the longest weekend ever.

I feel fortunate to live so close to a canon service facility.
They had my camera for about 4 weeks in December. They were nice enough to give me a loaner until they received the parts and repaired mine. |

Just curious, but what's happening with these cameras that need repair so soon in their life? Also, do you think Canon has good customer service? |

Mine needed a new main board, at a time when Canon was trying to produce as many Rebel's as possible in time for Christmas. |

I just wanted to add my UPS rant. I ordered a camera that was shipped last Monday and all week, the projected delivery date was Thursday. I was taking a photography class on Friday so really hoped to have the camera by then. I was carefully watching the tracking and on Wednesday night, it arrived in Eagan which is two towns over from where I live. As of 2am, it said it was out for delivery.
I patiently waited all of Thursday for the camera to be delivered. I waited until around 7:30 before I gave up hope (they deliver until 7) and I called the UPS number to see if I could go to the warehouse and pick up my package. They said I could not but that they could forward a message to my local warehouse (this was the national number) and have them call me on Friday and let me know when they were going to deliver. At this point, I didn't really care because they were going to deliver after I needed it, but I decided to have them do it anyway.
Half an hour later, someone from the local warehouse called and told me she'd done some investigating and couldn't really figure out why my camera hadn't arrived. And, in fact, had never left Illinois. I told her that I'd been tracking it and it said it had arrived in Eagan and was out for shipping. She told me that I could only see the "information for the consumer" and that she had more indepth information that I could not see. I asked her what the information on the website meant then, if it wasn't what was really going on. She wouldn't really answer my question, she just kept repeating how the information I could see was information for the consumer, just for the consumer, blah blah blah...in essence implying that the information on the website was a bunch of crap that they just make up.
Had she just called and said that the package was on the truck but that the driver had had too many deliveries and couldn't make it, I would have been fine. But her call just annoyed me more. The website tracking is all made up? I don't think so. On Friday, when the camera was delivered at 4:00, the tracking information said "delivered, 4:07." Seems pretty accurate to me. I think maybe I'll shoot UPS an email and let them know that their employees are telling customers that the website is full of crap.
Well, that came out a lot longer than I thought but it felt good to type it. :) |

Can I play too?...If your package doesn't look like it was used in a football game or participated in a destruction derby when it arrives, then how about this one.
At work we get two UPS deliveries a day, morning and afternoon. Morning is those "two day" or "overnite" jobs and afternoon is anything else. My package is on the truck in the morning, my UPS gal told me so...but she tells me I can not have it til the afternoon because it was not shipped 2day or Overnight. WTF is that about...she told me the scan would show up back at the office if she gave it to me early. This is after it sat in their warehouse over the weekend.
UPS sux...and don't every ship to a PO Box using this clowns...you think ebay sellers charge too much for S&H...these guys will take you to the cleaners and then send it USPS anyways because of the PO Box.
K...I fell much better now.

I know Purolator won't even accept a package that is addressed to a P.O. Box..I figured it'd be the same for all the other shippers. I think Fedex won't do it either. So I guess if you only have a P.O. Box and you can find a shipper willing to accept it then you should be prepared to pay a little more...since no one else does it in the first place :-) |

One of the benefits of living in a high-rise apartment building is I never have to worry about that kind of stuff. All packages for residents of the building, whether UPS, Post Office, Federal Express, etc. are held by and can be picked up at the building's dry cleaning (!) counter just by showing a picture ID and signing for the packages. This counter is open until 7:00 PM on weekdays and I believe 3:00 PM on Saturdays and it is so nice not to have to sit around at home waiting for an important package you are expecting. There are television screens in the building lobby which list the numbers of all apartments with packages waiting for pickup; this information is also available on one of our cable TV channels.
Well, we do need a few perks like this to justify the sky-high (pun intended) rents we have to pay! |
