An external flash (like the 420EX and 550EX) work wonders in this department. The 550EX (maybe the 420EX - I don't know) can be configured for AF use only, so you can use it to focus in LLC without it firing.

I remember in the old days (hmmmmm) when i used my Contax SLR, if i wanted a low light shot but didn't want to use a flash then I'de set the camera on a tripod and light the subject then focus it manually and turn the light back off again then take a series of shots with different exposures. but im sure this is not what you meant.

focussing in a real time situation is best done manually in my humble opinion.

hope this helped you a bit.

I've found that if there is enough light to see the subject thru the viewfinder so you can do manual focus, there is enough light for the AF to work. If it's too dark, the flash will fire some short bursts to enable it to focus.

The poor persons way to low light focus with the Rebel...

1. Flip up the internal flash
2. Autofocus (The internal flash will strobe)
3. Flick the lens to Manual focus.
4. Close the internal flash
5. SHOOT!

I have used that method quite successfully :)
