I know that that there is a way to combine multiple exposures in order to create one shot with a 'virtual' exposure much longer than any one component shot (for example to create star trails). What PS technique is used to create this combined exposure?

Screen blending mode. You duplicate your layer, put the copy in screen mode and it "double" your exposition. The problem is that you'll lose saturation and contrast.
Image stacker is a software that do the same thing but he seems to calculate differently because if you compare the results, he always give you a well saturated and more contrasted image with more detail than photoshop. Both software share the same downside. If you double the exposure using the same image, you also double the noise, then you should always remove noise before stacking images even if they are low noise images at start.
