I really enjoy shooting sunset/twilight images. The problem is there are many places in DC where I can't take a tripod for some of the shots I'd like to work on. Other times it's just not convinent to haul my big assed tripod with me.

I'm looking for some suggestions. I'm not picky right now about using Nikor lenses, but would like to see what folks suggest both on the budget end, and on the higher end.

Any suggestions?

got $1500+ dollars? that is probably the area you are looking at. You will want a f2.8 or lower for what you describe. I just got my D70 yesterday (the error one!) and just using the kit lens is great. There was another thread with a link to landscape shots with the Kit lens there were awesome!!
Not sure how great a landscape lens it would be, but great for portraits is the 50mm f1.8 for around $100. It is fast and would work great in low light.
I am ordering the 50mm prime and also looking at the Nikon 70-300mm f4-5.6ED to have a full range for not TOO expensive. But need to get the error fixed on D70 first.

Nikkor 17-35 f/2.8

One of the very best Nikkor lenses made.
