Just got my new D70, and dammit it all if after every shot I get an flashing Err message. It seems to be a mirror lockup problem. I have removed the battery, reset the camera...not to mention sent an email to Nikon (no word, yet). I am able to get it down by just pressing the shutter again and it returns, and able to shoot another.
Anyone have any ideas? Had this problem...yet? Wonder if I can reinstall the firmware and fix it that way. Off to Nikon I go.

This may sound stupid, but shut it down, take the battery out, take the lens off and re-seat it, and try again. I had something similar when I didn't have my lens seated just right. But for some reason it only seemed to reinstate the communication when i did it with the battery out.
That's how I fix most things tho - take it apart, put it back together, and hope you have a place for all the little bits. |

Pedro, I tried that once...but here goes again.
It only says Err. The manual states to take out the battery to "reboot" it
Alright...nothin. same. May have to try a new battery?

Did you buy it retail, or over the internet? If you bought it retail, you can probably just go and exchange it for another.. If you bought it over the internet, you may have to send it to Nikon. |

The battery lasts for ages.. i got at least 500 shots out of a single charge. I don't use the LCD much, that uses the battery more than anything else. |

Tracy;
Try formatting your CF card, or replace it with another one that is formatted for this camera.
ERR is usually a read from the card error.
Let me know if it helps. |

I am pretty sure it is the mirror not going all the eay down to its resting position. Done all the resets and reformatting. I took the lens off and seen a little "switch" on the bottom (down my the DOF button). So I fiddled with it up and down to see if it would drop the mirror. Did the whole reset thing again. Lens back on and used a pen to hold the little metal switch down. Held the shutter. got about 5 cont shots then err'd me again. Haven't been able to replicate it though. OH YEAH! Can play with the remote off my PDA!
OH WELL. I can learn the camera and checkout quality at different settings until Nikon gets back to me. Take anymore ideas. Thanks all

I have only 1 more Idea:
If you are using Lithium 123 batteries, take them out and replace them with AA's. Also, wipe off the battery terminals with a dry cloth to be sure they are free of oils. (I know it sounds stupid for a new camera, but give it a try). I hope it helps. |

can't use the AA, but they have the 3 CR2 battery pack. I am going to get some for that in a few (and eat). try cleaning the terminals now.
300 shots with flash on max output and view on LCD and battery indicator just moved off full....sheesh.

The latest report for anyone else with this conflict. Needs sent in for repair. I was told that they have quite a few calls about this happening once in awhile because dirt or something else makes it stick. But that it is self limiting and only happens once or rarely. They think mine is probably a small burr on the mirror arm and hinge thingymabobber, that will need to be taken off. Told me it has happened before with SLR's and is an easy fix. So, after I am done playing and before I get too attached to it will be off to CA. My WAAAAAAHMBULANCE is here! Anyone with experiences on the timing of Nikon and repair? Week, weeks, months, years, decades? (ok the last 2 will be what it feels like.)
Oh, did I mention that I only payed $963 for the kit. hehehehehe (C: |
