Not sure I get this entirely since I am just learning how to use all the funky tools in the digital darkroom but can I make a duplicate layer off of an original and use both layers as part of one picture to enter in challenges legally?

Basic Editing:
Layers: Only adjustment layers may be used, and the layer must be applied in normal mode. All other types of layers and all other blending methods (modes) are prohibited. Layers may not be used to apply a prohibited effect to an image.
Advanced Editing:
Pretty much open to everything.
Does that help?

you can use multiple adjustment layers.
The "normal mode" is the blending option. When you create a layer, in your layer palette to the left of the Opacity adjustment, you should have a drop-down menu, should default to "Normal". This adjust how the layers blend with each other (i.e. dodge, burn, luminosity, etc).

Normal mode is just applying a layer in regular fashion with no change to it. As you look at the Layer window, you'll see a little selection box that says 'Normal.' You can change this (for advanced editing) to other blending modes. Some of the most common are Multiply, which makes your image darker (and does other cool stuff) and Screen, which makes it lighter (and does other cool stuff). Experiment! Have fun!
But remember that Normal must be used (without layers) in a Basic editing challenge. I forgot this and was DQed once. Doh!
