Ok -- lighting is one of the best parts of photography, but I've found it's one of the most elusive. I see gorgeous lighting, try to recreate it, and find out I have to edit quite a bit in photoshop.
A good way to learn is to look at photos and try to guess their lighting. Here's some great examples of "seeing" the light: See lighting through the eyes of a cinematographer.
For the challenge:
Guess the Lighting: Create your photograph; try to use more than one light source to make it more interesting. Write your lighting techniques in the photographer's comments. Voters should try to guess the lighting techniques: Softbox, beauty dish, natural lighting (what direction, through windows, etc.), reflectors, painting with light, umbrellas, etc.
Learn to light by learning to see the lighting.
(I think this could be a great learning challenge. I'd love to have some of the lighting masters back (I keep thinking lvicari)) |

Sounds like fun.
On a separate note, you should be diagnosing lighting from magazine ads. Anytime you find yourself waiting somewhere there are magazines, open it to any ad, and try to figure out how many lights there are, where the light is coming from, and if you can discern the type of modifier they used. It is surprising how much information is in there if you really study the image. |

That's why I think it would be fun to do here -- because after you diagnose, you can see if you're right. :) |
