since the canon 28-300 weighs in at a wopping $2500.00
any thoughts on the quality of the sigma, I'm not expecting
much as it only cost about 250 but I am curious as to what people
think |

I had one for a while and never was very impressed with it. I think you would be better off buying two or three inexpensive lenses to cover the range. The kit lens and one of the 7x-300 lenses should offer better performance than the Sigma 28-300.

that's kinda what I figured so I was looking at this combo
canon 28-135 IS not a L but we all know that this is a sharp lens
and
sigma 135-400 4.5-5.6
so, what do you think of this sigma lens? |

i have the 28-300 for my rebel, and it's actually lived up to my expectations. I wanted a lens with lots of range, and performs reasonably in most situations. it searches a bit in low light, and the motor is a bit noisy, but has produced some really decent sharp images for me. it's the only lens i have for that camera. it's actually really nice to have that much range in one lens if you like to travel light and be prepared for anything. |

I have never used nor even heard of the Sigma lens so I have no idea if it is good or not. I have been very happy with the 28-135 IS though, I don̢۪t think you can go wrong with it.

I found that if you are able to stop the lens down to f/8-f/11 or so then you can get reasonable results, especially if you aren̢۪t out near the 300mm end of the range. The lens works well for bright sunny days on vacation when you don̢۪t want to be bothered with lots of equipment. Everything̢۪s a trade off. I was able to get good shots from mine too so I don̢۪t want anyone to get me wrong. The lens can produce good results but I have just been able to produce better results from the likes of the kit lens and 75-300 III combo with not much more hassle.

ok when DPC's very own lens Connoisseur hasn't heard of a lens
you know it can't be a good thing! |

I don't have any first hand knowledge of the Sigma 28-300, but I read a lot of reviews about it. I eventually decided to spend an extra $100 and get the Tamron 28-300 XR lens. This lens seemed to get better reviews from people who used it than the Sigma did. I have been very pleased with the Tamron lens. I do a lot of traveling involving hiking and camping and such, so size and weight were important to me. I have no complaints about its performance, either. I have some great shots taken with this lens, even at 300mm. |
