What's the weather like in Iceland in mid September? My wife and I are planning a trip to Switzerland and have been toying with the idea of flying Icelandair because they allow up to a seven day layover in Iceland with no penalty. Our thought was to spend 2 or 3 days in Iceland and then travel on to our final destination. The last price I got was from Boston to Amsterdam via Iceland was about $650-$700 each round trip. |

For the ones of you traveling from USA I think the only way to get direct plane tickets it via icelandair but also there is a possible to go through London with icelandexpress.
I would like to paticipate in this but I´m not sure how much time I can spend with you. Heiða please keep me informed.
It´s to bad that you probably will not be here next weekend because then I´m going to hike up to Icelands highest montain on Vatnajökull which is Icelands biggest glacier and covers around 1/10 of Iceland. |

There is no good answer to this. You can have 20°C and sunny but there is more likely that you´ll have windy rain and 5-10°C.
Often September is fine but there is a big change of getting a lot of rain. |

Septembers can be good. But expect any kind of weather, specially if you are going in the highlands. (snow, sleet, etc). I find that september here in the capital area are actually quite nice. Dryer and calmer than you would expect.
But June/July are the best, 24hr sunlight, and 12 hour 'golden hour' every day :)

This sounds like it would be a fun trip. That is too far away to say with conviction that I can go, but I am definitely interested. That 12 hour "golden hour" is a landscape photographer's dream! |

I work for the Flag Carrier in Iceland and if you are serious then I can talk to them and try and get you a discount (USA-KEF-USA only thought) I think a group of 5 would be minimum. |

Sounds very interesting, we could even request an "Iceland" challenge here on dpc =)
I would probably join you over a weekend. I say tents rather then hotels... It's cheaper, brings us closer to the nature and much more fun. If it rains, we'll just need more beer =)

Yup, tents are more fun, and the most interesting/beutyful placen don't have hotels near them. Anybody coming with me to Veiðivötn this summer? ;)

Charging batteries shouldn't be a problem. An hour break at a gas station, resturant or a farm. They usually love visitors =) And, as someone already posted, 12v to 220v convertors would solve the problem. [/url] |

So is there a way we can come up with a ballpark figure on this? Say that hypothetically we have all the US DPCers leaving from either NYC or Baltimore (both have non-stop Icelandic Air flights). I come up with about $800 US for airfare round trip in July/August of this year. So add in $100 as a buffer. So $900 air, not including travel from other parts of the US. What else do we need to account for? Remember we want to aim for higher numbers initially so people don't get caught short. :)

Could get some snow in December then it could be nice, but most likely snow in januar-februar, I think summertime is the best time to look around here :)

Hang out with Arnit and Heida and the many other excellent photographers in Iceland? What an opportunity! I'll start putting my money in a jar! But only mid-late May or early August would work for me.

Me and Heida live in the same neighbourhood. There are only couple hundred meters between us. It would be great if some of you guys from dpc would come to iceland. |

I was checking about photo-ops in Iceland yesterday and read a review of a vacation package in Iceland. The guy mentioned that there are shelters on the roads (marked on the local maps) where approx. 12 people w/sleeping bags can sleep overnight for free. There's room to set up a portable stove, and he said he used thermal water for bathing. That sounds like it fits right in w/a DPC trip doesn't it? I would be very interested in going. The British photo mags say that Iceland is the greatest local worldwide for a shoot. Hope we can pull this one together! |
