I found a potential issue in Lightroom's pano merge that could impact folks who used it to merge JPEGs.

I used Lightroom to merge my panorama (it works well) and when I did I got an unexpected artifact - Lightroom created XMP sidecar files for all my Raw images even though I have my options set so it specifically will not. I did a little digging and I found this post on the Adobe forum. In it the author states that if you're using a Tiff or JPEG file Lightroom will modify the original file by updating the last modified timestamp of the file even if it doesn't make any changes to it. I'm fairly certain that this would render those images as ineligible as proofs for the SC.

This isn't cool because I know a lot of people (like me) like Lightroom because the adjustments are supposed to be non-destructive. In the case of the Raw files they are, but it still leaves me with XMP files that will be lying around when I go to archive the originals and since I don't create them as a rule they'll be a mystery to me months down the road when I can't delete a directory that's supposed to be empty because it's not.

Anyway, I thought I'd give you all a heads up in case this impacts you. Hopefully you still have the originals on a card or backed up somewhere.

That's a good reason to always work on a copy of the original, even for RAW files.

For stitching JPEGs I use the (free) demo version of AutoStitch ...

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that Lr needs to make changes to correct distortions and optimize the matching from image to image. Since it is processing multiple images, it needs to store this stuff somewhere, and for RAW files, the .xmp is the only place it can. For JPEGs or TIFFs, the metadata is also an option.
If my hypothesis is correct, then a .xmp file should be created for a RAW file. For JPEG or TIFF, I would expect that what happens would be dependent on the Lr preferences. If the preferences are set to create .xmp "sidecar" files, it should go there. If not, then that data would have to be stored in the metadata of the main file.
In any case, I would be incredibly careful with non-RAW originals and any software. When shooting for a challenge in a non-RAW format, e.g. for a minimal-editing challenge, I'd keep originals in a safe place, and make copies to do editing. I wouldn't even let software *transfer* my originals.

Photoshop Elements 13 seems to work quite well with all six of my images. Only on the edges where it attempted to fill in areas did I see any artifacts, and I just simply cropped those out.

I used LR CC 2015 to make a pano from Fuji raw files. No xmps to be found.
