Could be hard for someone to come up with the original for proof (a jpeg that's been untouched by software) for anything taken earlier this year.

Yeah, but maybe the photogs who usually end up on the front page who mostly shoot RAW would be weeded out.

Might have some interesting and refreshing entries.

I like it. Typically my Free study and Best of entries fall below my average - but picking out a minimal edit shot might be interesting and might even enable me to fall even further below my average ;)

I like this idea too.

Can't see this or the Expert version happening as you/we have had all year 'preparing' for an advanced editing 'Best of'. Might work for 2016?

It's different in nature to a 'prepared for challenge', but they are Free Study suggestions so as long as you have archived images, there's something to work with.

I don't think everyone 'prepares' for the Best of anyway. I would expect that many will simply cherry pick one their best image (that they didn't submit already) that they happened to take during the year. I think this may make things a little more difficult for a Minimal challenge, but certainly not so for the Expert. With the usage of composites alone, you have the potential to turn a good or even mediocre image into something great.

Expert can be open to everyone, not minimal. I never shoot JPEG. It simply doesn't make sense. Said that, advanced is ok and enough ;)

Raw images usually embed jpeg "preview" images, and there are tools to extract those images (e.g. exiftool). So a possible workflow towards a minimal editing challenge may be to extract the jpeg preview image, (minimally) process it and submit the result. The only issue is that preview images don't have exif section embedded inside them, so one cannot submit an extracted image as original for validation. However, the exif information is associated with the extracted image as they are both embedded in the original raw image.

So the question is whether SC is willing to consider the original raw image for validation in such a case?
