Hi everyone. I have a job thing coming up on Saturday, it is for a lady with a hair pulling disorder called trichotillomania. She wants pictures of her getting her hair cut. I am pretty new to photography, and I have never taken pics of anyone getting their hair cut! Does anyone have any suggestions? Her husband was just going to take a few snap shots, so I guess they don't have to be perfect, but they are going in a national brochure about trichotillomania. So I'd like them to at least look nice! Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm just planning on showing up with 2 camera disks and taking 200 pictures of her and hoping some will turn out good.
Thanks guys. |

Lighting,
set your camera for the correct lighting in the room, ie, tungsten, fluorescent etc.and if you have a bounce flash or indirect lighting of some sort.
Nothing worse than bad shadows.
Take a few samples before you start.
hope it all goes well for you,

With a 3 MP camera you're going to get images 7" x 5" at 300 dpi (magazine quality).. Choosing slightly wider angle will give you more cropping options and probably a wider aperture (faster shutter), but will either make the shot smaller, or lower quality. It's probably worth bearing this in mind when you're shooting. You may like to shoot a variety of focal lengths to give you more options. |

What aspect of the disorder are you trying to cover/accentuate in this "project?" How great she looks now? Close-ups of the consequences/effects of leaving it "untreated" for the dermatologists?
If you are in a hair studio, you'll probably have pretty bright and even lighting. Try to watch out for clutter in the background, and try to figure out how to use any wall mirrors to your advantage and not let them become a distraction. |

Thank you guys a lot for your help.
GeneralE, the lady said she wants these pictures to educate the hairdressers about this disorder (the pictures are going to be sent to salons around the nation) because she wants to show them that people with this disorder DO get their hair done at salons...At least, I think that's pretty much it. She wasn't terribly specific. But anyway, thanks a lot for all of your help and info.

perhaps watch for reflections in mirrors, make sure you use them (the mirror) to add vs. take away from your images. |

That's kind of what I thought might be going on ... so I'd suggest an assortment of both "fahion" shots, and some close-up "medical journal" shots to help them recognize what's going on and exactly how it affects the hair and scalp (and psyche).
Make sure she knows that people -- even if they don't have the disease -- appreciate her sacrificing some of her privacy to help improve life for others!
Good luck!

Hey guys--
Thankx for all of your help...I got an e-mail from the lady with the disorder and the director of the trich center, and they sent me a copy of the brochure. They used three of the 249 pics I took, and I thought the ones they chose were the 3 worst, but then, that just might be me...
Anyway--they recieved lots of photos, the director said, and mine were "by far the best they had recieved!"
Just in case you couldn't tell, I'm a teeny bit excited about this! :) And thanks for all your help.
