John Hedgecoe's "The new manual of Photography" is my current favorite. Not all about digital, but very helpful especially for the SLR user. Got my copy at CostCo for about $20.00 bucks.

YOu won't be able to get everything from one book, so go to the library and start reading any and everything you can get your hands on. In NYC, you have a great selection of libraries from all of the 5 boros.
