Has anyone tried? any reference shot that can show with and without Gel filters?

Very odd question. They're no different than glass filters as far as their effects go, there just are a far greater variety of them. And that greater variety means the question is too broad to be answered, as stated :-)

:)

I have used filters placing in the front and I can see the difference and was not sure it would be when we place it on back of the lens. I have 17-40 and never realized that it has a slot to place a filter on back until this morning (always something new to learn) :)

so before I buy one, I wanted to know what everyone else think and some reference.

I haven't used any color filters, but I have used custom White Balance settings to simulate them. If you set the WB to a distinct color, you will get an overall shift to the opposite color (on a color wheel). My recent "Green" entry had the WB set to Magenta, and my recent "Night" shot ("Blue Moon") was made setting the WB to Yellow (similar to using the Tungsten setting). I was thinking of submitting something for "Golden Hour" using a yellow cast (by setting the WB to Blue) but ended up submitting something else ...

I carry a 4x6 print of these color swatches in my camera bag so I can do this almost any time -- feel free to download it and try it out ... the upper two rows represent true opposites, the bottom just assorted colors to experiment with.
