What budget do you have for a telephoto?

I don't have a budget. I have to start saving. I first want to get a wide angle for scenery, then I am going to save to get an IS lens in the next year or two. So, the more photography I sell, the bigger my buget is! I sure need to start promoting my DPCprints!!! :)

Ok so I'll propose a goal for you to aim. A fantastic Telephoto is the Canon 400mm f/5.6L, it does not have IS but is one of the sharpest 400mm Telephotos ever made. And at US$1099.95 it is a bargain compared to the other 400mm offerings. I needed IS since I do a lot of handheld shots so I went with the Canon 300mm f/4L IS with a Canon 1.4X II teleconverter, a good combo but more expensive than the 400mm.

i would second that, the 100-400 L IS is a great lens.

Well how much is it? I need IS too since everything I do is handheld. I rarely have a tripod with me since they are so bulky, and my husband refuses to carry it! :) Heehee. I have all the time in the world to save up. I plan to get my wide angle by mid year next year and my telephoto within 2 years after that. Who knows what could happen in that time. I could win the lotto or break my 10D (i hope not), but that is my plan. I am a financial planner, so I have to put these things into my personal budget WAAAAAAY ahead of time so I can reach my goals :)
