maybe. but the old Steve McCurry is still rocking it, with no signs of slowing down. check out this review of his latest book.

look at the dates on the photos, then try to figure out the settings. factor in the possibility of shooting on film and you get even more of an appreciation for someone who has absolutely mastered the tool in his hands.

Joey L isn't a photojournalist

I disagree. I think that a more accurate statement would be "Joey L isn't just a photojournalist". Joey does more than just photojournalism when he poses his subjects for artistic purposes but some of his work certainly does qualify as photojournalism.

If you look at his website and other sources of information, you'll find that he is deliberately distancing himself from photojournalism. He is most certainly not interested in being the new Steve McCurry or the new anyone else.

So what are National Geographic photographers considered? It seems like he's going in that type of direction with Guerrilla Fighters of Kurdistan and Jimadors of Jose Cuervo

I would label him more as a commercial photographer, if we are to assign labels. As far as I know, he has never been in National geo., but has shot images/ads for the nat geo channel. This guy does work that I would call photojournalism...love his work.

from his wikipedia page:

In discussion with The National Post, Lawrence said he used studio lighting and a modern style to shoot the photos, saying "they become overlooked when they are depicted in... black-and-white..., as noble savages, as unchanged people". The stylistic treatment is to render them too as part of the modern world.

That is pretty much the opposite of National Geographic.

That is why I said "Joey does more than just photojournalism when he poses his subjects for artistic purposes but some of his work certainly does qualify as photojournalism."

regardless of labels and methods, joey is documenting the world he travels in, and creating quite a body of work. he is going places and bringing back images that will stand the test of time.

i'm still fascinated by mccurry's work. he's still proving himself capable of staying out in front.
