I'm considering buying this remote control if I can find one that's not too expensive.
But it won't be of much use to me unless I can significantly extend the wire, e.g. by about another 5-10 metres.
It looks to me as if an extension cable like this has the same kind of connection things as the RM-VD1, although Sony does not, as far as I know, specifically state that extending the cord is an option. Do you think it would work?

The 3.5mm cable you gave a link to will not work. The connector for the RM-VD1 is I think 2.5mm, so if you find an extender that is the correct size it would work.
