I have enjoyed Nik's tools so much and especially the Analog Efex. I have been using the bokeh tool quite a bit and it got me thinking today. Is it better, when I want bokeh, to pull out some expensive glass, like say, an 85mm L and shoot it wide open. Or am I better off maybe using a 24-70 L at 7.1, getting everything tack sharp and put the bokeh where I want it with Nik?
Is there an appreciable difference between "real" and "manufactured" bokeh? |

No comparison. Try duplicating something like this...
... in post. Not gonna happen. Sigma 50 Art @ f/1.4 |

Jason -- I haven't experimented with Nik's bokeh filter. Can you throw up an example or two? |

I enjoy using it for the interesting blur it can introduce, but I never thought it accurately replicates shallow depth of field or even bokeh. Not that all things photography end here at DPC, but I haven't used it here because I thought it was illegal. |

...sigma 85 @ 1.4, I can't do this in analog efex, but I do love analog efex. I use it for most of my b&w conversions.

Nik's Analog Efex: when you click the flyout arrow to get the tools menu, in the left column, "bokeh" is one of the effects. You can set blur as elliptical or as tilt/shift style. |

I used it in this shot, was shot at 7.1 and added the blur with Nik

Good example. The effect really works well in this image, but it is readily identifiable as an effect, and not shallow DoF. The eye/brain catches it right away because the in-focus areas don't form a plane.

what kirbic said, its hard to replicate the dof plane accurately in post combined with the fact that certain lenses give a specific look to the defocused areas. its not just blur.
the 85L and especially the 135L have their own character.
