is there a way to shoot in black and white with a canon rebel digital?

I don't think it is possible. In any case, the best thing to do is to shot in color and convert later. You will wind up with much better quality and more control of the final result.

Also adding filters when taking the picture can change the look before you transfer to a post-production program.

I don't think that any dSLR has any in-camera effects like b&w, sephia, etc.Nor does it have video.

You cannot shoot b&w in camera with the rebel.
