I just took this photo at my daughters softball game with my phone. When I got home and was looking through the photos I was amazed to see two images of the ball in one photo. I am still trying to figure out how this happened. A long exposure might explain it but that makes no sense since it was sunny and a long exposure would have been blurry in these conditions. But the ball was obviously exposed twice somehow. Anyone else had this happen or come up with an explanation of how it happened?

I wonder if the second ball (the one that appears to have passed the batter) is actually a similarly colored hat, jacket, bag or something else on the ground behind the fence. A bit of yellow seems to appear above and below one of the horizontal fence poles.

But way cool shot either way!

that could be it. Maybe a batters helmet. But I wonder why it didn't appear in any of the other photos I took. I need to go back and check again.

i agree, her glove is way to high to catch the "ball" that has passed the batter..

Yep mystery solved. I went back and reviewed the other shots I took and what I thought was a ball in the other shots was probably a batters helmet. It was just that I didn't capture the ball in the other photos so in those it looked like it was just one ball. But it is in the same spot every time so definitely a stationary object.

I think it is a UFO.

Glad that you figured it out.
My first thought was that it may have something to do with the "rolling shutter" effect. It makes moving things like airplane props look very strange in photos made with a shutterless camera.

I have another theory. Did you have HDR on, on your iPhone. Camera captures two images and combines them. Ball moves between 1 and 2?

ha ha! kind of like blue and black or white and gold.

Here is another shot. Pretty much proves the theory that it is a stationary object in the background. But when looking at the small photos on my phone it looks like a ball. Especially since it is the same color.

Close examination of the second "ball" show the bottom rail of the chain link (cyclone) fence passing in front of it.

The REAL question is, why on earth is she wearing such a baggy sweatshirt/windshirt to bat in?

I know right??? She was wearing it in the dugout because it was cold and windy. I don't know why her coach didn't tell her to take it off before going out to bat.

Too much wine, maybe? I only see one object in this photo. ;P

Ha Ha! that is because you are looking at the wrong one. The first picture I posted has what appears to be two balls. This one only has the yellow batters helmet in the background which is the exact same color as the softball they were using. So I was thinking it was the ball.

Either your HDR was on, or your iPhone glitched and took an HDR-like double exposure anyway (it happens to me lots of times).

Hey Jen, glad the mystery was solved. But would you please thumbnail those images? One of those pesky site rules about large images in the forums :)

I would but I don't know how. Since I don't want to add them to my portfolio or workshop. I don't have very much space left in either one.

Maybe post just a link to the image...?

HDR was the first thought that came to mind to me as well. It has the HDR in phone look as well. eta: looks like the mystery is solved! :)
