Anyone else want to tell the class why they don't vote?

We know who you are.

I don't vote on my images (as I'm not allowed, and couldn't do so without bias).
I don't vote on images I've seen prior to voting eg. a DPL, DPCO etc team mate who has asked for feedback prior to voting (as it's against the rules and wrong, and I couldn't do so without bias).
I don't vote on challenges when I don't have the time.

Other than that, I vote on 100% of images in challenges, WHEN I CAN.

I comment when I can, and only when I've got something of value to say.

You could have the 3YO sit on your lap and push the number on the keypad for your vote ... ;-)

I have kids ages 5, 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16. Though, I find I sometime use voting as an escape from that reality ;P

I think we've turned this thread into a "Fathers Anonymous" meeting.

"Hi. My name is Vlado"
"Hi Vlado!"
"Hi... um... yeah... I guess.... um... I'm a father... and it's 16 years since I last slept properly" (or however AA meetings progress after the initial greeting / admission) :)

You do realize I stay up late thinking about that exact thing when I have a high running score?

I've had it happen. I voted on a challenge. I came in third. Someone who didn't vote came in 2nd. If I removed my 8 from the voting and recalculated, I would have come in 2nd.

I am not sorry I voted!! Their picture deserved the 8 and I was happy to give it. I was more irritated at the person who didn't vote.

I am more than happy to reward good photos. I enjoy seeing what people have come up with and actually enjoy giving out high scores to worthy photos. It's so much more interesting than the challenges in which I haven't entered. I have more of an appreciation for what people have done.

THIS!!!!

I'm more irritated at people who cannot concede that someone else's photo is better than theirs :P

Although having said that -- if you don't feel you can take yourself and your score out of the equation, and that you feel that your own score will affect how you vote , then I'd rather you skipped voting.

I think it's funny that you assume Mark would have given you an 8 or higher.

Nonononono... If I hadn't voted, I would have moved up a place. I don't care how that person would have voted. It's just that, since I gave them a vote, I would have liked fair ups. :)

I think his point is that if the other person had voted and given you a 4 (or anything lower than your finishing average), you would have had an even lower final score.

Yup. But it seems like it would have been more what it should be. I'm not saying it right, I guess. I think people should just vote and enjoy the process. I look forward to seeing what people come up with in challenges. And I think it's fun to reward the ones I admire. Whatever you vote -- get out and vote.

Three of each.

Here is a problem I have noticed in my own voting. When I vote on pictures entered in the same challenge as myself I tend to compare the pictures to mine. If I think the picture I am voting on is better than mine I give it a higher score. If I think mine is better I give it a lower score. Therefore, I am using my picture as my personal standard. Is there observer bias? Yes probably, as I sometimes (not always ) think my picture is better than the score I am receiving at that moment and vote the other pictures accordingly. Therefore my scoring is not based on a consistent standard. I guess the only way around this is to not vote on pictures when my pictures are in the challenge. Do you feel this way?
04/20/2015 11:01:32 PM · #124
As it stands, photos are only getting about 60 votes per challenge these days. If the people who enter don't vote, that number will drop even lower. If you're all OK with your score being decided by 10-20 votes or so... And you'll notice we end up with lots of ties these days, too. That's what happens when the number of voters drop. Then if all 20 voters give 5s to half the pictures, and you've got a whole slew of ties...

No, not while I'm voting. I might at some stage think my entry should be doing better (or be surprised that it is doing better than I expected) but I don't compare my entry or my score to what I am voting on.
