Hello, my name is Valerie. I found this site while googling for an online photography club.
I am partially self taught (I took a photography class in high school back in the '90s, but that was before digital, and it was mainly about how to develop film), but know next to nothing about digital photography.
My short term goals are to take more pictures and improve my editing skills (aka: learn how to edit digital.) Long term goals are a bit more vague. I'd like to start working with models or doing free shoots to build a portfolio. If I manage that... Maybe one day open up a portrait studio/ photography business.
Very pie in the sky stuff.
For now, I just want to tinker and improve my skills- both straight out of the camera and in the editing department.
I enjoy photographing people, architecture, flowers and macros. I love black and white photography but kinda suck at it (would love love LOVE to improve my b/w skills.)
That's about it.
Any advice or direction on how best to integrate into/ participate on the website is welcome and appreciated. |

hello and welcome
i learnt so much on this site, enter the challenges ask for feedback
make friends and maybe try get a mentor etc that you can ask question of and share challenge entries with before a challenge via pm etc
add some photos to your portfolio
ask and ask and ask again
you see a photo you like look at how it was shot technical settings light etc try to reverse engineer it or ask the photographer or on the forums about it
no stupid questions so dont be afraid to get stuck in

Yes, welcome, welcome. Most people here don't realize I'm a misunderstood genius. I'm also a renaissance man and avid pizza eater. I am building a fighting force of extra-ordinary magnitude, applications are being accepted but you must have TOTAL CONCENTRATION.

Hey, Valerie!!! Your goals pretty much reflect those of almost everyone who has come to DPC. How far you go is entirely up to you! Most of the time it's fun. Half the time it's frustrating. Sometimes you want to quit. Once in a while you'll get really pissed off.
Embrace it all!!!
Oh, and right now, this very minute, stop reading this and go check your camera settings. Make sure that you have the right time and date for where you are because that is the single most common reason images get DQd.
Also, do not touch your original, ever. Process a copy of it (whether jpg or RAW), and keep it just in case you win a ribbon. The top 5 places need to provide the original image in order to validate the entry. |

Welcome to the crazy house!
I have learned so much while on this site and I know you will too, but don't get hung up on your scores and never take them personally or to heart, it means nothing about your skills.
There are tons of peeps who love helping just ask for it :-))

Either that or stay and enjoy. But when you find yourself putting your living room lamp and your husband in the river, you'll wonder why you didn't listen to me.
