so I have a few weddings and parties booked in the coming year and I got to thinking, what happens if something really bad happens to me and I can't shoot the event? I know my contract, or so its says, protects me from financial ruin in the event something bad happens, plus I have insurance, but what about the people who were counting on me to shoot their big day?

So I ask, what is your backup plan and is there anyone (a few would be nice) in the Philadelphia area that would be willing to fill in for me if I am unable to physically shoot an event (I'd gladly return the favor)?

if you're lucky, you might connect with some local professionals through dpc. this is where being part of a local, professional community has it's benefits. when i started out, i knew no one. over time, though, from covering events and simply being out there, i have made a lot of friends and connections. we all help each other out routinely, many times at the last minute simply because things come up.

there are probably some local organizations you can join, as well.

it's a good thing that you're thinking about this now, rather than when it's too late. (this is also why having a dependable second shooter is a good thing.)

It's definitely something that needs thinking about and you need a good contract to reflect those possibilities. It's also one of the main reasons to get in contact with people in the area offering a similar service/style. I've tried to build that up but i'm in such a rural area there really aren't that many wedding photographers, and what there are are a bit rubbish in my view. Apart from a few and i've made a point to build a good relationship with them so i have one or two that might be able to step in if needed. It's also good business practice as we have a good referral thing going - if I get a request for a quote and i'm booked then i'll send them their way and visa versa.

That is a good idea to start doing as i've found that one of the most frustrating things about becoming slightly successful doing weddings is you have to turn so many people away because of the nature of the job - there are only so many prime Saturdays in the wedding season. I really could do with a lot more bookings this year - i'm up to about 18 but i am really aiming for 25-30 - but it just seems like most quote requests recently are dates i'm already booked for. Very frustrating particularly when the wedding sounds amazing. I had to turn down one couple from Hong Kong who were coming over for a three day celebration in a castle. Family party on the Friday, an Indian wedding on the Saturday and an English wedding on the Sunday. That would have been amazing and very good for the bank balance! But i was already booked for a relatively small wedding elsewhere and couldn't manage it. Bah!
