In that price range, I'd recommend picking up a used Fuji S602 on eBay.It's a GREAT camera all around, has a great sensor and can produce great large prints. it does awesome on full-auto, and as you learn more you have all the full manual controls, custom whitebalance, great speed continuous shooting, etc etc. I Think it's a great camera, and right now they can be had for great price.

Don't get the Fuji s5000z. DonĂ¢€™t get me wrong, I love it, just too limiting and the pic quality is only mediocre. (I have already outgrown it and am droolin on a Canon 300D or Nikon D70) If I had it do do over I would get the Canon Powershot S1 IS Digital Camera 3mp or the G3 or G5). S1 - 10x zoom and better CCD than s5000 same 3MP, G3 4MP G% is about the same camera with 5MP... Canon pic quality blows away the s5000. I know. I got the fuji for the 10x zoom and my dad got the G3. His pics are less noisy and sharper.
Note - I was limited on $$ and that was the deciding factor for me...
