Well, let me try this then: The value of a Style Of challenge for a community of photography enthusiasts is that it forces the participants to extend themselves as photographers. But my negligent, low fidelity photographs don't have much to do with photography. It'd be like challenging a group of chefs to make toast. They could do it, but it wouldn't add anything meaningful to their professional CVs.

The difficulty of someone who creates outside a school, or designed manner of style, is that they create by feel, and are usually unaware of and unconcerned with how others see their work. I would imagine fish are not too good at describing water. You may think of your work as negligent, but your work is far from random; intuitive is not the same as unthinking.

The toast analogy misses the mark, I would say it is more like scrambling an egg. Everyone knows how to make scrambled eggs, but if you watch Thomas Keller scramble an egg, it is a very different process. A simple thing can be done in vastly different ways, and some results are rather glorious.

I doubt our attempts to shoot in emulation of your "style" will satisfy you, but yours is a unique viewpoint, and as an exercise it should be a good one, even if I expect the images that garner the highest scores will not look a great deal like your work.

Well, if you do be interesting, do it while on a GTG, then the other DPC'ers can get their shot for this challenge!

Anita, please abandon this mad idea. I am not a good photographer, and I have no discernible style. And I would truly wince at seeing it demonstrated by anyone but me. One is more than enough. Thank you.

I beg to differ(on the not good part) this is and probably always will be one of if not my absolute favorite photograph, not just on this site but that I've ever seen anywhere.

It's chocolaty and velvety smooth, it's almost edible.

What am I missing? The title says "philosophy", not style. I plan to go to ubique's profile and start looking at photos he has found interesting and reading his comments about them. Not saying I won't view images in Paul's own portfolio, but this challenge seems just the nudge I needed to wade into and maybe wallow around in his comments.

It would be wonderful to see DPCers absorbing, for a week at least, some of the quirky mentality of our most iconoclastic "non-photographer", as we all set out to make genuinely *interesting* photographs :-)

oh, bear, bear, you invite pastiche ... Helas, ou sont les neiges d'antan? les nuages, les nuances?

Oh dear. That guy? For heck's sake, he shoots half his pictures with a damn iPhone! Pretentious bastard, too.

His better half - now there's a photographer! :-)

I hear that he is using stuffed animals as props in his images, like these:

I shan't try to emulate ubique in my shot (at least not beyond a broad alignment with the intents of the challenge), but I will commit to comment on all entries and give considered thought to each.
03/31/2015 08:20:18 AM · #35
I will also commit to commenting on every entry. As of this writing, there are just 5 entries, so it'd be much appreciated if we leave it about there :)

It's a singular honour that I will not be the only one to think is unwarranted. I reckon my contribution to DPC is more as an appreciative critic than as a photographer. You know the old saying about,'Those who can, do, and those who can't, teach'? There I am. The comment bloke. The bloke who can't tell f8 from fate.

But I've just indulged myself for the first time ever in flicking back through my own posthumous successes, and it's smacked me firmly upside the head that it's not the comments I've made that matter to me, but the comments I've received. BrennanOB remarked earlier here that contrary bastards like me are indifferent to how others see their work. Which is true, and untrue too. Because I have realised how much I treasure the many literally delightful comments I have received from this community on my photographs. As indifferent as I like to think I am, I am nonetheless thrilled when a photograph of mine inspires someone to extend themselves in appreciation; in commentary.

I'd like to enter something myself, but I'm not entirely clear on what's required. Happily, I can't comment on my own stuff. I doubt that the pretentious bastard would understand my work anyway.

None of us do, guess we will all have to do the fate thing.

This challenge is great. Some people won't like to hear this, but everyone on this site needs to assess themselves- Why am I here? What do I hope to accomplish through photography? What are my chances of becoming an all time master that is revered long after death, placed in museums and sold for millions?
No matter how many virtual ribbons achieved, or virtual praise heaped upon your work from cyberspace- its not going to happen for most, or probably anyone.

So, be yourself, and take interesting pictures.

ETA: This post was meant to inspire, not depress. Self imposed limits are the worst of all.

Oh by, to inspiring comments such as those with the intensity and thoughtfulness of ubique - what a delightful challenge. My brain is just percolating with excitement as I read through comments and view ubique's portfolio.

No idea what I'll find to shoot, although I get to drive 12 hours over the next two days so will be seeing lots of things.

Thank you thank you SC for this wild and stimulating challenge.

ubique - "... the point of owning a camera is not to be a photographer, it's to take pictures. And if the pictures are standard views of standard subjects, they simply can't be interesting. And if a picture isn't interesting, nothing else matters." - 12/08/2014 08:58:02 PM

Well I believe that's the beauty of this challenge.

The results, both photographs and comments, will be a good read. I hope my camera finds something worthy of entering.

I'll comment on all the photos also, as a tribute to one of my favorite commenters.
