Thank you to everyone that offered suggestions. I ordered a new Canon 70D from B&H this morning. I also upgraded two lenses! There are some great March deals in play until the 28th, and it made more sense to go with new vs. refurbished. My bank account is light, but my heart is excited to play with new equipment.

You're gonna LOVE it. A whole new world of cool stuff awaits you :-) READ THE MANUAL! There's lots of nifty stuff in the newer cameras.

Thanks Robert! I promise to read the manual THEN start peppering DPC with questions! The timing should be perfect as I will have a month to learn the new camera and lenses before heading to a photography workshop in the Columbia River Gorge. I have a terrific spring ahead of me! Can't wait!

Edit: royalty to loyalty.

They do. I used it last fall when I bought my 60d. I went on ebay and bought a cheap broken Canon P&S for $5.00.

Check with your carrier about homeowners' coverage for that branny new 'spensive piece of equipment. The word gorge ia also a verb as in "The river gorged itself on my brand new camera when I slipped in the mud and it flew off.".

i'd advise on a separate policy, not homeowners. I have business insurance now, but i used to have all my gear insured (state farm) for less than $50 per year for about ($6k or $7k of coverage). Vacation are more enjoyable when you aren't worried about your gear. I climbed all along the rocks of south shores of Bermuda and stood in the ocean with my camera with no fear and got some great shots i otherwise would not have.

I talked specifically with my agent and my homeowners covers my car and me on vacation.

I have $1000 deductible, but that still ios a big help. I have my serial numbers all recorded in a file.

Great advice, I hadn't thought of that. Will be calling my insurer on Monday!

That is also something to consider. I guess I should call my city and find out what is required for a business license. Might make sense to "start" one even though selling photos is not my main focus. I did sell two sets of my giraffe photos so far this year...

You don't need a business license. You don't even need liability insurance it's just to protect you in the case someone gets hurt or you break something during a shoot. In my case I got it because some venues require you to carry liability in order to shoot there.
