This is great advice those cheap 3rd party batteries suck.

I usually agree, but the batteries I have gotten from Sterlingtek (Recommended by Cory and a few folks on Flickr) have been better than the OEM batteries.

I did just take a chance and ordered some 3rd party batteries through Amazon for my new Micro 4/3 camera. Sterlingtek didn't have the ones I needed and the Olympus batteries are much pricier. I did read the user reviews and ratings carefully, however.

I've gotta chime in and agree here - even years later I stand by this company, they've supplied me with many high quality batteries. (They really should pay me for recommending them so often..)

thanks for the recommendation, I'll be in the market for some new batteries.

On that note, i've been contemplating the need for a grip myself, mainly for the extra battery life during event shooting. does it offer the benefit of eeking out the last bit of juice from the batteries over simply swapping out a fresh battery when the first one nears its end?

It will potentially depend upon your grip. Some are ... lesser quality than others. Mine, which is a Nikon brand, seamlessly switches between the two. It's great for intervalometer use. I've never had a battery die mid capture though, so not sure what happens there. In my experience, your first battery should essentially die, then it will instantly swap to your second without interruption. ETA: To clarify, when my camera swaps batteries, the first battery is literally unusable, even if I manually select it, while the second is golden.

And I will agree that SOME 3rd party batteries are grand. I use 3rd party batteries for my GoPro's and they have been stellar as well (cheap too!), but I don't think all are equal on this front, so be cautious (FWIW, for GoPro I use Wasabi batteries).

Update:

So, I went to place my order for the new camera today.. Finally, finally...it will be at my door by next tues and I ordered it from B&H my first order there.. Wooohoo!!

As for the battery grip,The kicker is that this time around wasn't there before, they are including that grip for free, sometimes its worth waiting on a few things :0)) So, I just went ahead and brought 2 more regular batteries. It leaves more room to get some prime glass now.
