OK so I went out this weekend with some friends to shoot some pictures of downtown Tallahassee, FL. After we finished myself and one other person noticied a large amount of dust in our camera bodies, largely due to it being very windy and change lenses frequently. So I took the camera home and used my (don't yell at me) air compressor set to a low setting to get rid of all the dust. Worked great, sensor was clean, mirror clean, body clean. However, when I went to go take pictures again, dust in my viewfinder! Just a few specs and some squigly thing. So I'm doing the painful route and sending it in the Canon service today. On a posivite note, though, it still takes great pictures and I got my 550 flash on Friday and couldn't be more pleased. I'm still in the process of reading the THICK manual that came with it. |

This is one reason I am hesitant to buy an SLR! And the CMOS sensors are supposed to be better about not attracting dust. Wouldn't mind a fixed lens like the PRO1 if it had a low noise CMOS sensor like the SLRs and the same great ISO range.
I need new models out in a hurry. I am having trouble waiting for the right one! |

Canon is great at doing cleanings for your cameras! I got mine at Best Buy and they do two free cleanings a year for 4 years on my 10D. Plus, there are tons of local shops that are canon approved for cleanings. It doesn't cost too much. I prefer an SLR to anything. It's impossible to get the shots I want with my other cameras (point & shoots).
I wouldn't stay away from an SLR because of the dust. You have so much more flexibility with one. It's worth it! :)
So, Tallahassee has a downtown? I thought the only nightlife was the cowhaus, or has that closed down? |

Out of curiosity, what is the cost to get your camera, including the sensor cleaned? I have cleaned my sensor with Pec Pads and Eclipse fluid, but am just curious to know what it would cost to have it professionally done. |

That's good to hear that they do good cleanings. I hope so since I am sending it to NJ to their factory center. They don't offer any cost up front. They wait until you send the camera in and then contact you with the charges. I hope it's not much since I just bought the camera.
I think cowhaus is closed. I haven't heard any advertising for it in a while. Suprisingly there is night life here. Plus they have opened a bunch of coffee shops, which are really nice. How do you know about TLH? School? |

I typically use an airblower for the sensor, works OK except after 6 months or so, things start to stick on the surface.
However, i have always had some dusts on the viewfinder and "hair" (eyebrow hair probably) on the viewfinder that i can'ts eem to get rid of. That's normal for SLRs though. Every now and then they dissappear when i use the airblower on the viewfinder (take out the protective piece and blow on it).
I think Canon does sensor cleaning FREE of charge if it's not due to a user violating the warranty, which includes use of eclipse fluids (it'll void warranty, because it can get liquid between the antialiasing filter and the sensor (at which point, you're screwed and they'll have to remove the piece to clean it).

Air compressors are the absolute worst for cleaning sensitive equipment because the air can and usually does contain atomized oil.

My camera back broke off, and I had to send it to NJ too. I told them I wanted a thorough cleaning. They charged me $135 for the total cleaning and to replace the camera back and to tighten the battery compartment. I know locally (in L.A.) it is about $35 for a good cleaning... from places I called.
I know Tally because I went to UF... and like many people in FL State Schools, I had friends who went to FSU, UCF, FAU and FIU. I also visited Tally to go to shows (I saw 311 there in 1996 and Pavement in 1998). I have driven through it a few times to go to New Orleans, stopping to see friends on the way. There was NOTHING to do in Tally. No offense! :)

Well the only comforting thing is that I have a diaphragm style compressor which is oil-less. Otherwise you are right!
I am hoping they won't charge a lot, and of course, I learned my lesson! I did however have excellent results with a canon 28-80 lens that had a fiber of some sort sitting on the lens behind the lens on the mounting end (not sure what it's called). I looked through a bunch of websites and no one had any step by step instructions on how to dissassemble the lens and there were lots of warnings saying that when a lens it taken apart and put back together it is never as tight as it was before.
So I took my air compressor and went to town figuring I spent $60.00 on it, and it would probably cost close to that amount to have it repaired. At first it blew more dust and junk on the rear lens, but after putting air in just about every crack/crevice I managed to clean the entire thing out and it works great now without the fiber blocking the picture.
I thought about living with the specs in the viewfinder as I believe my other canon has them in there, but since the camera is 1 month old, I wanted to enjoy having a dust free camera for a while.
I agree about TLH, not much to do at all, but it is a great place to raise a family. I am originally from Brandon, right next to Tampa, and I am glad that we moved out of there. It has become quite unbearable to be there as the population has exploded. |

Well Canon is very nice, they did a whole cleaning and inspection for free, even shipped it back 2 day air. Very professional and courteous. Lesson learned, though. |
