Well, they are finally spreading from the beltway out. Too cool. These things are so noisy, when you open your door, you think you're in a movie and sound isn't real. I hope to be able to get some sound recordings made.

Wanted to post some pix for folks who don't know what they look like.

Watching them come out of the shells is very cool. Enjoy

Okay.. so it's what? Once every 17 years? So do they eat vegetation? They are in mass?
Are they coming to Boston?

=/

According to the report on NPR, the ambient noise level runs around 68-70 decibels. You can probably pick up an audio stream from All Things Considered at //npr.org

This is the "Brood X" variety, which surfaces once every 17 years.

oh good! :)

(is that good, or am I missing out on something "wonderful"?)

And, by the way, a Cicada is a ... what?

Pretty cool, actually. Do they sound that loud in real life? How many are there? Do they cover the trees?

They are a HUGE UGLY BUG....and YES they are loud, they drown out the airplanes that fly over our home....and they are so bad in some places, you can see the tracks in the street where the cars have run over them...YICK, And on the sidewalks, you can't take a step without stepping on one....they crunch...lol

Oh brother! Sounds like the horrible time we had with gypsy moth catepillars (which I am allergic to) back in the 80's. Cars were actually slipping off the roads from them, and they defoliated acres of trees. You could hear them making their droppings and munching the leaves of the trees. They were all over the sides of the houses, etc... Sorta Alfred Hitchcock - like.

Does any one know how far north they are expected to come?
05/22/2004 10:16:33 PM · #13
They destroy younger trees, and its ONLY the males that make all the racket...can ya imagine how loud it would be if it were all of them. They also are not the most graceful of flyers, they will and often do hit you or fly into your hair, some of them are up to 2 inches long. Thanks goodness they only come around every 17 years ; )

that link entitled "ewww!" (hehe) has pages explaining the calendar (see Plan your Wedding links) - apparently people can plan their big day on the year they won't be out - and what states they are due in.

My question ... that I can't find an answer too quickly on the web is ... how long do they stay out for? Days, weeks, months?

Looks like they don't go much further than Pennsylvania but I could be wrong.

We have a ton of cicadas in our backyard. After two days (and nights, that's when they hatch) in photog heaven the gross-factor kicked in and now I can't wait for them to go away again ;)

Goshâ¦We donât have any cicadas out here in western Washington and I just know there is coming a challenge topic of âcicadasâ and I am going to have to make one out of play dough to take a picture of and I will probably be DQâd for submitting a photo of original art and then I will be back on anti-depressants which, as we now know, are a health risk andâ¦God this DPC site is a real killer!

I've been seeing a lot of cicada pics lately, in the local newspapers, on TV, and on the web. FranziskaLang's are about the best so far.

Got mine here too. The sound is just annoying now :)

Man I'd be in heaven with all those badass bugs everywhere.

I sustained a cicada injury today. I was outside on my cell phone, and one clumsily flew (they don't fly well, having been underground for 17 years) between the phone and my cheek. I snapped my head back and swatted it away, and now my neck hurts.

They are loud. You can be driving down the interstate at 65mph with the radio on and you can still hear them. We have them all over the place where I work, but none at home (Thank God for that).

Jay -- You've got some really good ones in there. I'm going to have to change my lense up from the 50mm to the 70mm-300mm and play around after peeking at those.

Jacko -- We're waiting. Where are they?
