Need some help. If ever I am in the top or my image is questioned I will need to turn in the original. Problem is I just noticed that when I import my photo to PS it is in a RAW file. I adjust the RAW file converter and when I clip open it also changes the RAW file for good to reflect my adjustments. Do I always have to choose "save" and rename the file instead of "open" before beginning work on my photo?

I assume it's writing to the sidecar files, not RAW. Adobe doesn't change RAW file data except in DNGs (and even then, it's just metadata that changes).

So your settings are being saved to a "separate" file.

What Neil said. They are called "sidecar" files and they are appended to the RAW file, not a part of it.
