For the past several months, I've been participating in the new (still in beta) social network, Ello. I'm curious if any others from DPC are there. Please let me know if you are. I'm there as @billbanning.

Ello is a great network for photography. There are lots of artists, designers and techies on this network, too. The photographers run the gamut from abstract to fine art, to street, and everything in between. Lots of excellent images no matter your taste... and in a clean, simple, minimalist interface that handles large images extremely well.

Ello's major claim to fame is a promise to NEVER have ads or share user data for any purpose other than internal metrics and improvements. Read their manifesto here.

Check out my feed here.

In addition here are a few feeds of some photographers I'm following there:

@thomashawk
@burkhardkaiser
@fischerfotos
@giseleduprez
@streetphotographylondon
@haligali
@sarahlawrie
@davidseibold
@deadbatteries
@dknisely
@rinzizen

If after looking around, you're interested in joining this fascinating new community, drop me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send a invite so you can join in.

I just looked at the site...
1. I found no way to actually 'find' someone there in particular (no search function) other than hovering over one of the 'bubbles' or circles or whatever until their name popped up.
2. The ever moving bubbles I find very disturbing and almost nauseating and in the three times I had to go back to the main page, it was never the same so could not find the portfolio I was just looking at.
3. Once actually in a portfolio other than scrolling up or down I did not find the navigation intuitive or simple - very confusing. First a screen is there and then it is not. Then a picture is there and then it is not. Going to the previous page via browser navigation never brought me to the previous page.

Ello beta

And for some reason, twice now when I visited the home page, my Photoshop spontaneously launched. Something is screwy over there.

Just did it again - rebooted browser from scratch, erased all associated cookies, went to Ello home page and Photoshop started loading withing 3 seconds.

1. The search function is there when logged into an active account. As is the ability to comment on posts. The links in my original post should take you to feeds of some interesting photographers where you can see their posts and read comments left by other users.
2.Once you have an account, you'll go into your home page, not the floating bubbles page. All navigation will be from that page. Your choices will be to see your own feed, a aggragate feed of all the users you are following (with ALL posts they put up, not a feed created by an algorithm), or you can click on the bubble icon of "friends" or their user name to see just their feed.
3. With an account, navigation is much simpler. In essence you will have a left panel that you can toggle through different functions. One view will be the icons of your "friends" allowing you to go to their feeds. Another view is notifications, listing all comments on your posts from others, and mentions of you in other comments. The people you follow can be divided among two news feeds: Friends and Noise. How you divide your friends is invisible to them. Many users place their most active friends in one and others they are simply interested in following casually in the other (Noise). This is up to the individual user.

As far as the photoshop launching... no idea. Never seen it myself.

Hope that helps. It is still in beta. There are glitches., but the support is amazing. You have direct access to the developers and the pay attention.

All that may be well and good, but without an account, it seems there is no real way to assess its value. I followed many of the links you posted as well as the one to your feed. What is the black and white image that shows if I scroll down? Once that shows all bets are off for me. I have to close my browser and start again. Every time I select a photo and see the individual photo page, I cannot go back, it never shows the page I came from, hence, I am lost. I can only follow the links you posted since if I go to the Ello home site directly (the bubbles page) Photoshop spontaneously launches. And, as I said before, although they are nice looking, the navigation icons on the individual photo pages are anything but intuitive.

If they are truly beta-testing then maybe they can create an account "Beta-Tester" into which people can login without a password, and which functions (mostly) like a real account.

"Real" accounts are available. Send me an e-mail and I'll send you an invite. Or not. It's working extremely well for me and a growing community Of over a million users. Not sure what the browser issues are you're having, or why. I'm not a tech geek and thing work well for me.

Let me say that this isn't and "instant on" experience. I started out looking for good photographers, posting soeme of my favorite images and engaging in commenting and dialog. Every day I gained more followers and followed more people. I enjoy the quality of the work and the tone of the conversations there. Excepth that's it's become a place I like to spend time and I hope it flourishes.

By the way... I'm in no way invested in teir success. I heard about it through several photo podcasts and requested an invitation online - no one invited me, but eventually I got an email with an invite from one of the founders. I guess that's still one way to get an account, but each new member also has access to their own invites to give away. This is much like gmail strafed out.

Sorry the experience isn't working for you. The offer for an invite still stands for any DPC'ers who want to check it out. Just PM me an email address.
