hmmm...not sure what to say.
The picture just seems like a really bad snapshot. Sorry to give it to you hard, but keep trying.

The pose is fine and the lighting is not too harsh, but the image focus is too soft and the negative space above adds nothing to the composition.

She has beautiful skin, her hands are really good looking, as are her lips, the shape of her face, her eyebrows. I'm wondering if you could get her to pose just a bit differently. Make sure that her eyes are open so you can show them off - fill the frame a bit more, and try to get the light a bit different to eliminate, for example, the nose shadow. I like the way the black hair melts into the background, but you don't need quite as much space around her (IMO).
You're lucky to have a good subject :)

Thanks for the detailed comments ursula. Looking at it now, it's quite obvious I over-processed this image. I wanted to soften the skin tones but went too far with it. This was from an impromptu shoot on my dock in total darkness, and focusing was guesswork. Most of the pictures of her are unflattering - she's a realy tricky subject so I was happy that these came out as good as they did.
I agree that a tighter crop would help a lot. |

If you add softness to an image in post processing then you should always try and do it on an additional layer so you can 'erase' the softness over the eyes and over areas where the softness detracts. The eyes are usually the first 'contact' and they tend to grab the viewer more when they are nice and sharp. |
