I have a two week window of opportunity to "test drive" the 300d with the kit lens. I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade to a dSLR or an Oly C-8080, coming from a Canon A70 which I'm outgrowing. I try to RTFM, but my eyes grow heavy and I fall asleep. I charged the battery this afternoon and have a nearly free weekend to put it through it's paces. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about a fairly structured sequence to evaluate the camera, rather than my first 50 shots, which consisted of things that looked interesting as I walked around the neighborhood this afternoon. What's the most effective AND efficient way of getting to really know this camera? (I have no other lenses nor an external flash -- it's just the 300d and the kit lens, BUT I have a friend with a 10d and a bag full of lenses!)

Basically take shots of things you will eventually wish to take pictures of. Mostly it's finding out whether the weight in your hand, response time of the camera, and noise levels etc are what you are wanting. Things like softness and focus speeds are more dependent on lenses than the camera itself.

You could try pictures that test low light conditions, try out the various ISO's and aperature settings, and long exposure shots.

If it's your first dSLR then you'll find you'll like everything about it anyways!

I suggest re-creating some of the shots you've done with the A70, then compare them side-by-side in Photoshop. Compare the levels of detail, compare the colors, zoom way in and compare the pixelization, etc., etc.. My guess is you'll see big differences, all in favor of the 300D.

What can a newbie like me add to the above?

Having the 300D for 2 weeks sounds great and am sure you will be sold on it by 'time up' I've had it for 2 weeks now and its growing on me daily though it will take more than 2 weeks to truly test the cams potential but 100% better than reading reviews (if only you had the D70 for the same time). I chose the 300D over the D70 not just for the initial outlay but the 300D 'felt' better in my hand and I think the (eventual) upward migration of glass and body is superior.

I got a second hand sigma 70-300 APO Macro Zoom today and looking forward to testing it out. A work collegue came back from Canada today with his new Minolta A2 (my previous camera was the A1), its awesome but in the fullness of time I reckon dSLR is the route to go down. enjoy your 2 weeks with the 300D, you'll be hooked.

Screw that. Go nuts. Take that camera, walk around an fire away. The pics are going to be great. You just have to figure out if you want a system with a fixed lens or interchangeable lens.

What can I add? I got my 300D in January and I've taken over 6600 images, and I'm still learning the camera. I take it EVERYWHERE with me. I love it!!! My husband asked me just today if I was afraid of wearing the camera out. I wasn't before he asked. Anyone have an idea of when I need to worry about that??????

Good luck and HAVE FUN!!

I'd say try to find some local sporting events to test the response time and stuff. Then (since they're usually in parks), I'd end up going around and messing with everything. There's nearly always opportunites to test stuff...benches, people, nature, in sun, out of sun, ect. :)

I really like the suggestion of recreating shots you've taken with your A70, it'd be a great way to see the difference. Maybe even see what you can do with the 300D to improve upon past challenge entries.

That's such an awesome opportunity, I would love to be able to do that! I'm considering upgrading to something, I'm outgrowing my camera too.

Just a quick check in. Took about 100 images. I think I'm falling in love, but...we'll see. What is blowing me away is how FAST this camera focuses and shoots. And zooming the lens manually is such a treat. And seeing the image in a real optical viewfinder is amazing. Yep, it's heavy, but that's becoming a non-issue. But like I said, it's early. We'll see. What fun! What fun!!!

A few years agoon a job site a client asked a carpenter "Should I worry about that?" (I forget what the that was) Carpenter looks at him very seriously and said " You can if you want to". Made me laugh, puzzled the hell out of the client. So if you want to worry, go for it. Some people swear that the D300 has a built in shutter failure at 10K shots, and that is why they sell it cheap, to get you hooked and then BANG just outside the warranty period it goes dead and you have to upgrade. Of course some people wear aluminum foil hats on their heads while in bed to keep the aliens from reading their thoughs while they sleep, cause if they don't know what you're thinking they can't abduct you.

Me, I don't worry about either. One such thread is here//forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1031&message=8822484 But I am well over the 13k mark and no worries. I look at it sort of like a car, average life may be 120k miles, but if you service the thing and change the oil often enough I figure it could go to two or three times that. I may be wrong but I'm unwilling to worry about it.

I find this about the rebel on the web: shutter designed for up to 50,000 cycles, you can relax !
I found that you can hack the firmaware in the 300D to make it became almost a 10D will all the feature exepted to the 6 image second (it a memory thing)... i done it, work great, no problem found !...

Ciao

Boomer I am deeply envious. I spend many nights sleepless wondering how I can fanagle a purchase of the Drebel so my wife would agree.

Hmmm like they say... asking for forgiveness is easier than asking for permission.

My tack was "Honey, you know how you say that I'm so hard to find a good birthday gift for ? And you always spend all that time trying to find just the rigth thing? Well I just saved you alot of time. And I took care of Christmass at the same time!" On the purchase of Bigma I just went for the forgivness approach. Now the 70-200 2.8 IS..... that may be tough.

I realized that my wife trully appreciated my pieces when I said, "Honey, I wanna buy a thousand dollar..." and I'm still married...

Okay - so here's what you do in this order:

1) Ask your wife to come with you to the photo store
2) When she accuses you that you might buy a Rebel, tell her she's wrong and bet her $100 that you won't!
3) Buy the Rebel anyway.

So...

That way you get the Rebel, the shop gets a sale and your wife gets $100 - everyone wins!

4) Ask your wife to borrow the 100 bucks you just gave her so you can buy an extra battery and CF card...

;)

My wife saw my message below and is now thinking I 'played her' when I bought my Rebel...

OOOPS! :)

Canon EOS-300D Rebel test drive: A question.... Will Canon non auto focus lenses fit and function (manual focus of course) on a EOS-300D Rebel?

Anything that's an EF mount should work. It's even possible to use old Nikkor manual lenses, with an adapter. Both focus and aperture are manual of course. M42 screw-mount lenses can also be used this way.
